I think they should change the name so they can get rid of those awful jerseys
and terrible colors.
What is more painful to the Indian nation?Calling them Redskins, or
taking their land?Hmm?
I agree with "Oh Really?" Harry Reid and his group in the Senate
can't seem to get anything done in Washington but seem bent on making sure
that everything is politically correct.
All Democrats, no doubt. With all the problems the VA, IRS, Benghazi, Federal
spending out of control, Obamacare sucking and they are worried about the name
of a football team? There are far bigger fish to fry.
Now the rodeo circuits want the name "Cowboys" dropped.Where
does all this end?
With the politician mind set of changing the name, should they not then demand
the state of Oklahoma to something else? After all, and please correct me if I
am wrong, Oklahoma translated means Red Person or loosely red skin.
TRUTHWell one thing is for sure, if it was the "Whiteskins"
there would be NO opposition to it.
Change then to the Washington Whiteskins.....problem solved!
Oh please. Senators have way too much to worry about when the American
Indians aren't complaining. Why has America turned into a land where
anything and everything offends anyone and everyone?! I think
Redskins (dropping the offensive part: Washington) is just fine.Going back
to the original moniker of Washington Senators is probably just as unPC as
Washington Redskins because hey, they're not senators. The senators would
probably be just as offended as the Original American Redskins would be by their
play. Changing to something else - what? Just close this team, open a
new team elsewhere and ta-da, the hullaboo over the name. Wait, we can't
do that, we lose the history? Well, precisely my point! It's been the
Redskins since I was a little girl! Leave it alone!
The fact that this letter to the NFL was sent only from Democrats says a lot in
and of itself. They will currently use any excuse possible to try to take away
from all the negative media attention the Obama administration is currently
getting... the veterans hospitals (VA), the IRS scandal, Benghazi, etc. By all means, lets not worry about those actual types of real issues and
instead let's just worry about the mascot name of a football team. How
utterly ridiculous! It's also telling (from the article) that
democrat senators involved in tight races this year declined to sign the
letter... knowing how stupid it would probably look to their voters and
consequently hurt their reelection chances.
The name has been with the team for almost 100 years. If it's bad, why did
it take so long for Senate Democrats to bring this up?
As Keith Olbermann said months ago, Daniel Snyder will change the name when 1 of
2 things happen...1) Bob Griffin, 3rd says it a "matter of
racial sensitivity" or 2) it dawns on DS how much $ can be made for
merchandise sales w/ a new moniker.
The Redskins have decided to remove the word 'Washington' from their
team name due to the fact it is an embarrassment to the sport.
All they really need to do is remove the caricature of an American Indian from
all advertising, the helmets, etc. and return to the R in a circle on all of
those items. Then when someone asks about the name Redskins they can either
refer them to a potato, tomato, or an apple which has a red skin.
As a Native American (Cherokee) I'm not offended by the logo... I'm
offended by the teams play!Maybe they should change the name to an
old baseball name: The Washington Senators... After all... the current
"Redskins" and the Senate achieve at the same low rate!
As I understand it, there are also many, maybe even a majority of Native
Americans who are not offended by the term Redskin. So, do they count? Or is
it just another of todays overly sensitive PC where all it takes is one person
to be offended and therefore they get their way over the vast majority. I
can't believe we are moving into such an immature age here in America. The
age of enlightenment. The industrial revolution. The nuclear age. The age of
the world wide web. This seems to be becoming the age of crybabies who have
nothing better to do than to run around and find something be be offended about
and then find someone to blame for it. Some diversity huh? Why don't we
just get rid of all mascots that even one person might find offensive. Name the
pro and college teams by numbers. Pittsburgh Steelers become the Pittsburgh
Number 1. The Washington Redskins become the Washington Number 2. And so on.
However I guess a person offended by numbers would complain.
I was born in the US. That makes me a Native American. If you want to be PC they
are called American Indians or indigenous Americans. Just ask one.
Best proposed alternate name I've heard is "Washington Department of
The name Redskins is only racist if the person using the name thinks it is. To
most people, it's merely a symbol and/or a name and nothing more. To people
who look for and see racism almost everywhere, it then becomes just another
excuse to jump on the wagon of the politically correct flavor of the month. From surveying friends and associates, when the vast majority hear the
name Redskin, they think of the Washington football team, not an ethnicity or
race of people. There is not nor ever was any negative connotation intended
toward any ethnic group by using the term. To now make an issue of this is
mostly just a waste of time. The way so many people in contemporary
society look for and take offense at almost anything is just plain silly and
clearly indicates how emotionally immature our society is becoming. We continue
to make great strides with technology, but keep ourselves living in the cave age
regarding intra-society emotions and associations. We're actually going
backward. It's ironic that 99% of complainers regarding this
issue are not Indians... the ones supposedly disparaged.
We are witnessing the "Wimpification" of America. Everyone is spending
their waking hours of the day looking for something or some way to be offended.
The Senator's, the American Indians and everyone else need to understand
that the a Mascot is a badge of honor. There is not a sports team anywhere that
says "let's find a mascot who we can totally embarrass or offend or who
will make us look stupid".When a mascot is chosen, it is chosen as an
item or person that represents toughness or character... or it represents how
the city or community is identified, it is NOT meant to shame the team or anyone
else. The name "redskin" is not meant to demean or be racist in any
way. The redskin, back when it was chosen, represents a warrior or someone who
will fight with fierceness. Only recently, when we have chosen to be offended
about everything.I am predicting that at some point in the not too distant
future, we will be eliminating one of our favorite Christmas songs because it
contains the phrase "Now we dawn our 'gay' apparel"
Hey Anti -"How about giving them back the land you stole from
them?"You mean you want all people of European and African
extraction to leave the Western Hemisphere?. . . Doesn't seem
to practical to me.
"Every Sunday during football season, the Washington, D.C., football team
mocks their culture," No matter what the team name is, someone
will be offended: offended of a perceived racist name, or offended that
tradition isn't honored. People need to stop being offended at everything.
Can't we all just get along and start by being nice to each other? The
attitude we have is one of distrust and hatred. The attitude we should have is
of love and compassion and understanding. We should first seek to understand,
then seek to be understood. We live that backwards - we are seeking to be
understood first. Who's going to listen first? Or are we going to just
keep the trend alive and shove political agendas down each others' throats?
We are stronger when we listen to each other and try to help each other.
When the local fans stop going to the games, stop watching them on TV, and stop
buying the merchandise, the name will changeanti-bush-obama,you going to give back the land YOUR house sits on?
It really is a racist name, and if American Indians want it changed, it should
be changed. The trouble is . . . The Washington Native Americans
doesn't have the same ring to it.
Dear Senators:Get Social Security secured, spending under control
and your personal affairs in order, then worry about the NFL.Sincerely,Almost Everyone
How about giving them back the land you stole from them? But no they won't
