Let's hope that we remain focused on the root of the problem here which is mental illness! These NRA gun banning side shows by the POTUS do nothing to remedy these types of tragedies!

And of course the very first comment to this article was not an expression of sympathy for the families of those affected but instead someone worried about defending their gun rights.

This is an awful tragedy. Condolences to the families of the victims, and hopefully a full and complete recovery for the wounded.

Mental health treatment is such a complex issue when blended with privacy laws, gun laws, base procedures, DOD policies, etc. It is far more complex than bumper-sticker slogans and extreme positions. For those who have never lived on a military base, you really have missed out on one of life's true treats. The bond forged between families is unbreakable and cuts across all racial and socio-economic issues. I miss my days living in base housing.

Hey TRUTH - You're saying Obama banned guns on military bases? That's far from the truth.

Weapons were restricted by Department of Defense Directive AD-A272 76 Number 5210.56 issued in February 1992 during the HGW Bush administration.

I know, I know . . . Your hero Rush Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck and others of that ilk are telling big lies and blaming a gun ban on Bill Clinton, but facts remain facts no matter how much Right Wingers wish they were not true.

Please feel free to look it up.

Re: "And of course the very first comment to this article was not an expression of sympathy for the families of those affected but instead someone worried about defending their gun rights."

And, interestingly, the second comment is a mocking expression of disgust anyone who is deeply concerned for those Fort Hood families, AND for how this regime's cynical political exploitation of this, and other horrendous human tragedies, will affect our own families.

You see, they're every bit as important to us as the families of those brave, capable, well-trained soldiers who were disarmed, left unprotected, and predictably, massacred.

For no better reason than they work in what liberals want to turn the Nation into -- a government-enforced free-fire zone.

The Army requires its soldiers to get a physical each and every year (I know, I went through several myself), why not during this process do they not require them to spend an hour getting a psych eval? Many of these issue can be spotted early on and treated.

I always got the impression the Army did it's suicide awareness campaigns as a goal to stay off CNN rather than care for the individual Soldier.

" capable, well-trained soldiers who were disarmed, left unprotected, and predictably, massacred."

Just where did liberals have any influence on soldiers not being armed when on duty on an army base?

I remember not having live ammo when doing guard duty in 1961. Hardly a liberal policy then.

Yea, if you're not armed in an open area when a gunfight breaks out you're in trouble. Just how often has that happen in your neighborhood over the last century?

So do those of us in the military now get to carry a weapon to protect ourselves on-base if we choose to do so?

Oh, no....we can't do that. You see, these are only "isolated incidences".

Fort Hood #1....13 dead.

Navy shipyard.....13 dead.

Ford Hood #2....3 dead.

And, I bet $100 that 'Gary O's' "facts" are not really facts.

Even IF they are....this law has to go be overturned. Immediately.

Re: "Just where did liberals have any influence on soldiers not being armed . . . ."

You're not seriously suggesting that disarming people and making military installations defenseless free-fire zones is some conservative plot?

Who, but liberals would come up with such a ridiculous idea?
