If we only had a Republican in the white house, we could "shock and awe"
Moscow with our military might like we did in Iraq and all this would be over in
a few days.
Russia is going at it the wrong way. Europe including the Ukraine is their
customer. Their worry is China encroaching on their territory and Muslims doing
what they usually do. They should encourage immigration from EU to Russia. The
population of Russia is too small for the size of the country.
Gary OIt ain't working. Obama basically surrendered American
dominance when he came into office in 2009. Reset button and the world apology
tour. Then he showed the paper tiger side of America when he called for a red
line in Syria and did nothing. Now agressive countries will continue to push
the limits. Syria, Iran, N. Korea, Russia, China, Pakistan, ect. The U.S.
needs a Reaganesque type leader in the future to otherwise restrain this kind of
despotic behavior in the world. And the allies, Britain ect. are basically
going their own way. Obama is the true emperor without clothes. And we for now
will live in a world with much more of this Putin type stuff going on. Do you
think Obama would have gone to war in Afghanistan if the 911 attack would have
happened on his watch? I don't.
He's too classy a guy to do it, but I like to imagine that Br.
Romney's massive "I-Told-You-So!" dance just turned on the strobe
lights and bass speakers. What would he have done differently? Have
a foreign policy to speak of. It is naive to suppose that Russia has somehow
changed; communism has orchestrated human suffering since before World War II,
and it has never ceased its ambitions-it only temporarily lost the force to
spread them at the collapse of the cold war, thank you Mr. Reagan and Mr. Bush.
Patriot..... we don't need to ask what would Reagan have done.... we know
what he did. WHy don't you detail what Reagan response in Lebanon was
after our troops were attacked there, killing over 300 of them? Why
haven't you used that as an example? Perhaps we could discuss the
funding of the Islamic forces in Afghanistan..... why didn't you detail
how well that worked out.... that we are now fighting those very same people who
we armed?I know... one man is a saint, the other a devil. And then you criticize Obama for not having military experience....
and yet Romney.... while he did serve... he was a public relations officer in
New York City during the war. He never saw combat, and never left the
county.I don't say this to demean Romney nor Reagan. But
rather the emphasize that we need to keep the playing table level. If
Obama's lack of military service - less alone lack of combat service - is a
disqualified, it needs to be applied to all, on both sides. You can't have
it both ways.
What difference does it make?
We all know a push and a shove will turn to fists if allowed to continue. The Oligarchs need war whether East or West to enhance their pockets and
it hasn't changed for centuries. obama is not as stupid or inept as many
people think but he sure is obedient. This is not a left or right, liberal or
conservative, issue but rather selfish and conspiring men and women in high
places seeking control and domination. A significant part of their
plan is to reduce the population of the earth to 1 billion people. Sound crazy?
Just ask the queen of England. How better than war to accomplish the task?
The high tech missile defense system of which you speak was designed (and poorly
designed) to shoot down Russian Nuclear ICBMs and mid-range missiles. Those
bases in Eastern Europe would have protected Western Europe, not Eastern Europe.
And at the time, the whole system was far from bullet proof. It would have been
a useless high tech Maginot Line. I am not surprised that GW would have been
100% behind such a useless, ill-conceived, and wasteful endeavor.Russia is not likely to Nuke a next door neighbor when they can just roll over
them with tanks. Think about it. If you set off a high explosive in your
neighbor's house, you might as well say goodbye too.Besides the
unfeasability of the whole idea is moot. The Republicans insisted on
sequestration, and that necessitates cutbacks in spending across the board,
even for worthwhile projects. And yes, I know, Romney filled the air
with useless blather . . . as if everyone didn't already know of
Russia’s attitude problem. They invaded Georgia in 2008. Their
“attitude” now is no surprise.
I've had my fill of this Reagan fetish, particularly for the gangrene
it's caused the GOP in recent years. It doesn't take much research to
learn that the Soviet Union was decaying as a result of flaws in economic
design. Gorbachev attempted radical surgery on a slowly dying patient, and he
ended up killing it. Reagan had his role, but he certainly didn't kill the
Soviets by outspending them. Outside of the Reagan cult we can still acknowledge
that the greatest achievement of the Reagan administration was the reduction of
the nuclear stockpile, a triumph of reason, not chest-pounding. Otherwise, I would hope we've learned by now that hurling missiles at
problems tends to create more problems, and at tremendous cost. We might be able
to flog Russia's military, but you'd have to watch Russia and its
allies go Moscow Chainsaw on the global economy and against our interests in
Europe, China, and the Middle East. Russia needs to be confronted, but in the
words of Isaac Asimov: "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent."
"It's a breach of international law, of national sovereignty, by a
major power," Herbst said about Russia's actions in Crimea. "We
haven't seen such a breach in Europe since the Nazis."Interesting words at the end of the article. There are two factions in the
Ukraine, 1- Pro western post WWII Nazis. 2- Pro Russian. The Western NATO side
and the Russian side of the Ukraine conflict have been at odds for over 70 years
and to think Russia is the only bad guy in the fight is beyond stupid. Look at the last 12 months and you will see a deliberate attempt by the
Western Oligarchs to pick a fight with the Russian Oligarchs by baiting Putin
into the Syrian mess when obama/kerry told Assad if you cross the red line there
will be consequences. Putin, to his credit didn't take the bait. Now we see
the same thing in the Ukraine, with the West baiting Putin again but this time
on the Russian boarder. There is obama/kerry again with the there will be
consequences nonsense. Putin again, to his credit has showed restraint but not
without warnings of his own.
Romney predicted there would be problems like this with Russia. Barack? he
said Russia wasn't a concern
@Copacetic"is to install the high tech missile defense system that
President Bush previously arranged with the Ukraine"Okay, now
I'm not an expert on military equipment so you'll have to explain to
me how a high tech missile defense system is a deterrent to tanks and ground
troops.@patriot"The USSR crumbled because they
couldn't keep pace with the US build up"I'm not sure
what fantasy world that is true in, but we live on Earth where the U.S. having a
massive defense budget had absolutely nothing to do with the Soviet collapse.
Copecetic and patriot,The request was for a SENSIBLE solution.Nothing you two have written is a solution to the situation, much less a
sensible one.Try again?
Wow, patriot, that was just awesome. Thank you...
re:GaryOThis is too easy Gary. So the question to ask is "What
would Reagan do"? Well Gary what DID Reagan do starting back in 1980 when he
took over for the over-matched Jimmy Carter? We had the BIG BAD USSR staring us
in the face and we had Iran too. Sounds like today huh? Reagan knew one
fundamental principle which ended up winning the cold war against the USSR -
PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH!! Thugs like Russia and Iran don't respond to
UN-style speeches - they laugh at them!! Reagan started by building UP our
military that Carter had dismantled. A bigger stronger Navy - a bigger stronger
Army and a bigger badder nuclear force. The USSR crumbled because they
couldn't keep pace with the US build up and they knew Reagan - unlike
little Jimmy Carter - was a force to reckon with. It's really that simple
Gary. Obama is in the process of dismantling the US military and
don't think that Putin isn't aware of it. When the bear has nothing to
fear the bear begins to terrorize the world and as I said China will soon join
with Russia in the same aggressive manner.
@ GaryO:In answer to your question...One thing
Conservatives would've done that Obama has not, is to install the high tech
missile defense system that President Bush previously arranged with the Ukraine,
but that Obama later cancelled after becoming president. That
would've been a true deterrent against the kind of bold military actions
Russia recently enacted, since it is far superior to anything Russia has to
counter against it. Romney clearly warned about the current
dangerous attitude of Russia during the presidential debates and Obama scoffed
at him for doing so. Romney undoubtedly would've followed through with the
regional defense-based installation to protect eastern Europe. By cancelling it,
Obama has left that entire region exposed to Russian aggression. And now we see
the result. As Commander and Chief, Obama's lack of real-world
experience has been exposed as a lot of bark without much bite. A paper tiger if
you will. As such, it has emboldened Iran, Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan and now
Russia. There will be more to follow.
patriot - You appear to be upset about Obama's handling so far of Russian
threats against Ukraine. What would you do differently? What do you think Romney would have done differently?Threaten
military action? Start World War III? From what I can see, Right
Wingers can come up with a constant stream of complaints, but they can offer
absolutely NO credible alternatives or real solutions . . . No solutions that
are not infused with unworkable relics of an unworkable Right Wing ideology.. . . Or maybe you do have a sensible solution. If so, what is it?
Putin will do whatever he wants. The US is not even in the picture and Obama is
a joke. China is going to be just as bold going forward and so will Iran. The US
has been reduced to be on par with the UN now. Liberals have destroyed the
United States as predicted.
DN Subscriber - It was a Republican Representative from Michigan who said
“Putin is playing chess, and I think we’re playing
marbles.”He's wrong on both counts. Putin wants to see
what he can get away with, and Obama is saying "Not much."International sanctions are being prepared against Russia as a result of
Putin's rash actions, the Russian Stock Market has plummeted, and you know
Russian power brokers, seeing nothing but financial losses ahead, must be
hounding Putin to back off.Putin may be a slow learner, but he WILL
eventually get it.Contrary to what you prefer to believe, we have
not had the means to win a war with Russia or the Soviet Union for over half a
century. And that's because no one wins in a nuclear war of mutually
@ DN SubscriberI agree Ukraine is not worth fighting over.Someone
who follows world militaries, in a conventional war with the Russians the US
would easily destroy their armed forces. The F-22 alone could neutralize the
Russian Air Force. Between Europe, Alaska, and the Navy the U.S. would achieve
air dominance in exterior russia in a few days. The Russian Surface fleet is
hardly sea worthy (any extended mission is accompanied by tugs for
breakdowns)NATO ground forces would stop any russian advance in it tracks
(probably wouldn't make is past Ukraine)The active US military is
almost twice the size of Russias, much more advance, experienced, and with NATO
allies would dwarf the RF.I suggest you do come research. The U.S. fought
two wars against Russian style equipment in iraq and we know how the
conventional war turned out.
We are dealing with an evil emperor seeking to restore the evil empire. It has been said that Obama is playing marbles, while Putin is playing
chess. The Ukraine is of vital national interest to Russia, but not
us. So, not matter how despicable Putin's actions may be, or how similar
to those of previous dictators, it is not something we should go to war over.
More importantly, we no long have the means to win an all out war with the
Russians. This officially marks the end of the era of American
dominance, and our relegation to second tier status.
Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Moscow reserves the right to use its military
to protect Russians there (Ukraine) but voiced hope it won't need to do
so.Hitler said the same thing to justify his invasion of Poland and
