Break down of the family produces the next generation of people who are dysfunctional. Obama thinks the government can solve this? Since the government can not legislate morality, it either comes from the home or it never comes at all and all the government programs in the world will never replace the fact that the family is the incubator for societies next generation!

On the contrary, ALL legislation is based in some idea of right and wrong - "morality". And if a lack of adequate law or indifferent law enforcement contributes to decline, it follows that good legislation with proper enforcement can contribute to better results.

If BO wants to improve the opportunites for minority boys, he should resign the office and take Biden with him.

repeal Obamacare and stop trying to force increased minimum wage laws.

institute programs that require personal responsibility rather than provide a safety net for slackards and reward positive initiative and achievement.

BO's philosophies of rewarding the slackard for doing nothing and punishing the productive by re-distributing the fruits of his labor and just the opposite of what minority boys need to see and adopt

Some previous commenters on this forum appear to believe that divorce and abandonment is something President Obama either invented, or is responsible for.
Apparently, they will continue on in this same mode, just as many GOP legislators do.

A noble effort trying to address a huge problem facing America. America is blessed to have a President with such strong resolve in the presence of so much hatred and negativism in our society today.

Negativism is alive and well in Utah and Idaho. Fortunately, there are wiser heads who somehow manage to keep the negativists in check. Let's hope thoughtful, intelligent people can continue to do so.

It is a noble idea, agreed.

I can tell you who's responsible for the current state of young black men: young black men.

I just don't feel sorry for those who through their own actions end up with less than desirable outcomes.

Its certainly not white peoples fault for the struggles.

Pres. Obama wants to improve the opportunity to improve the the lives of minoritys here are some suggestions

* withdraw from the "War on Poverty" The democrats lost that many years ago
* strengthen families - one father, one one mother in the household
* stop illegal immigration, close the borders, increase deportations (plentiful job opportunities would increase greatly)
* death sentences for wholesale drug dealers
* provide more opportunities for charter schools run by charities versus public education

By the way, bragging about all the times you got high in school doesn't make you a good president!!!

Q: Whatever happened to equality?
A: Affirmative action programs. (And they haven't even fixed the problems they were created to solve.)

Mark B I agree with you that law and morality are connected. But go to a political science class with a liberal professor and talk about morality in public policy and watch them hit the roof. Because they know that "morality" is one step away from the 10 commandments being OK to refer to.

Why is that so many who commented negatively here have obviously not read or listened to the President's speech?

Isn't honesty part of that "morality" they claim to possess that is lacking in the liberals they love to hate? If these people really believe in morality, shouldn't they at least make an effort to learn the truth so their comments will be based on something other than hatred of anyone whose skin color is different than theirs?

If they had taken the time to find out what the President actually said, they'd have learned that his speech had two clear main points. 1) No excuses, young Black men. No excuses. 2) The only person who can pull you out of where you are is YOU, and you will have to do that through education, hard work, personal responsibility and a lot of good sense.

But apparently learning and speaking truthfully are not real conservative values. At least not when they get in the way of spouting the party line.

I find it troubling when a POTUS confesses his sins to a group of impressionable youth! This sort of behavior is truly unbecoming a real man or a real POTUS! Talking about getting high and copping a Lewinsky are just sleazy no matter how you address it! Thanks once again Obama for showing how truly classless you really are!
