They have been using the tape test for "over weight" service members for
at least 20 years. I feel for these guys. I always worried about failing the
tape test and retired from the military before that ever happened. I made it
but it was not easy and I remember some guys getting liposuction back in the
early 90's. They are right that fitness does not always correlate with
body mass. I was always right up at the top in allowable body mass but I could
score better on the PT test than most of the skinny guys. I was a Triathlete
and worked out every day. Still there was always the body fat thing hanging
over me and my career.
How long has the military been using the tape. When I was in, if you passed the
fitness test, push ups sit ups pull ups and the 3 mile run you was good to go.
What has changed, besides a lot more people are chubby now than then.
