My wife and our friends were hiking in Zion National Park for 3 days when the shutdown occurred. We were halfway up the canyon without a shuttle running due to contractors being one of the first to be let go. All the bathrooms were locked and fortunately some of the water fountains were working. For miles before we got down off the mountains, we could see there was absolutely no traffic on the roads, of any kind. We only saw one person after the shutdown during the 3 days. That in itself wasn't completely bad but the services we had paid for were all closed. I believe after getting down to the visitors center that we were the last car in all the parking spaces and I had to drive back up and pick up the other 3 in our party with gates up and closed. The ranger checked to make sure that we had a pass for those days and knew we were last ones in the park.

On the drive out to the East all pull outs were barricaded so any traffic coming through on Utah highway 9 could not stop. Tourists were very disappointed with years planning.
