Tomorrow, Thursday, had the potential to be a very bad day. I had half prepared myself to watch my RSP's tank, resisting the paranoid view that it need be turned into a few small bits of gold. I wondered if my AF home was going to be worth eight dollars by the end of the week. I'm out of the country right now but was ready by noon today to transfer as much as I could out of the US banking system and get ahold of a bunch of cash. US cash; I don't think there was going to be a problem with getting Canadian dollars. I'm not sure it was all the right thing to do but I do know this; this isn't how to run the railroad. We've got to do better than these childish antics. We dodged the proverbial bullet here, but only by kicking the metaphorical can down the road. This exercise looms yet again in our future. Have we learned anything today?

So, back to business as usual. Spend money we don't have and borrow like there is no limit.

All this does is embolden His Majesty and give him the political clout to do anything he wants.

Anyone with the smallest amount of civics knowledge and experience with our modern political system knew the Republicans had zero chance of winning this battle. It baffles me that they even attempted it, knowing it was a lost cause, and knowing the damage it would cause.

Their naivety and hubris will be punished in the 2014 midterm elections.

Certainly worth slipping in that 3 billion to a Kentucky project (hmm, I wonder which senator wanted that) and also added in McConnell's debt ceiling trick. You see, apparently they passed something in this deal where the next time they want to increase the debt ceiling they'd have to vote to NOT do it instead of voting to do it. Obama can then veto it and unless they can override it the next debt ceiling increase goes into effect.

I am so proud of President Obama. He stood his ground and did not cave to the tea party. I know he did it for the good of our country. The tea party showed their true colors of how dysfunctional they are. Hopefully we can recover from the damage they did and get back on the right track.

It may be difficult to win back the trust and support of the American people if the federal government continues spending at unsustainable levels.

I don't understand where and how the complacency has set in. I can understand past decades of deficit spending...we were naive and ignorant. But $17 trillion, and $70 Trillion including unfunded liabilities, is unthinkable.

We are on course to spend nearly $400 billion in interest payments alone. What would have, what will happen, when interest rates increase? How will we be able to pay $1 Trillion in interest?

We need adults to represent us in the White House and Congress. We need people who will go to DC and pass a budget (hasn't been done in 4 years), and more specifically a budget that balances/doesn't borrow more money. This will require cuts to programs: entitlement programs and defense spending. It must be done.

Then we must begin paying down our debt so it doesn't enslave future generations.

Anything short of this is "unpatriotic", in the words of Senator Barack Obama.

I tell you right now....if that guy Obama and his liberal socialist followers don't agree to cut, cut and cut some more on Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, farm programs and all the other welfare programs....and NOT raise taxes one single cent on our job creators....if they don't agree to do those things in order to save OUR America...in just a few short months we TeaPublicans WILL shut down the government and we WILL force a government default on paying obama's bills....and we will NOT back down the next time! You have been given fair warning....make those cuts TEaPublicans are demanding....or America and the whole world will suffer because of your lack of courage! Yes folks, we TeaPublicans ARE taking back OUR America in 2014 n 2016. "P n P" in 2016.....Perry n Palin....yes folks it IS going to happen!

Hurray! We are SAVED!!

We're still borrowing money at a rate that we can't pay it back. We still haven't balanced the budget. WE have raised taxes, but, haven't made any cuts.

It's just like having the captain of the Titanic announce "open bar" while the boat is sinking. "Just stay on the ship a little longer, while we get the wealthy off of the boat first...."

There was never any chance of default, unless Obama decided to pull another "make things as painful as possible," defy the LAW and somehow block the required distribution and debt service payments using the billions of week to week tax money that continuously rolls in.

Obama will now continue his Imperial Presidency, with virtually no opposition, spending more money and refusing to control spending.

You said, "knew the Republicans had zero chance of winning this battle. It baffles me that they even attempted it, knowing it was a lost cause, and knowing the damage it would cause."

I can't believe we keep borrowing money we cannot repay. Do you know the damage that will cause? I suppose a collapse of our financial system means little to you....

The same thing was said when a small group of people stood up to the motherland and the most powerful military and navy at the time. A few years later a new nation was born where people had liberty and freedom. Which the socialists and left wing of the country have slowly eroded along with others, until we are slaves to our master "debt" and usury.

Good job! Hope and change! Anything to get that golden egg, even if you have to kill the hen to get it.

If the reasonable people of this country let them, the GOP and their ideologues will destroy this great and secular representative republic. Fortunately, the GOP and their ideologues are going the way of the dinosaurs and the sooner the better.

The republicans are eagerly and enthusiastically paving the way and rolling out the red carpet for our next President, Hillary Clinton.

I like how low the approval rating is for congress, but next election we will probably elect over 90% of them back into congress again. We as citizens like to forget the past and relect the same old people like our senator Hatch. But atleast we know that next election Hillary Clinton will win since the Tea Party help weaken the republicans. Thank you Tea Party members.

The knife has been stuck in the Tea Party. It is a self inflicted wound. Now, Tea Party, why don't you just keep twisting it in 2014?

I have to remind you all the time that much of the deficit and a whole lot of the national debt is due to Republican malfeasance leading to two unfunded wars. a tax cut that mostly benefited the wealthy, and a drug benefit package that was never paid for, not to mention Republican sponsored deregulation that created the basis for a financial disaster in 2008 that continues to this day. Do you really think that shutting down the government is going to help that?

"As the deal neared final passage in the House Wednesday, Obama said it was now time for leaders in Washington to win back the trust of Americans that was lost during the debt-and-spending crisis."

"Trust"? NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Except for 20 or 30 fiscally responsible individuals (Mr. Cruz and his ilk), the rest of Washington are self-interested hucksters.

Unless we cut about HALF the Federal spending, all is lost. That is the only way we reverse the National Debt. That is the only way we allow our free market economy to thrive. That is the only way we can afford to continue to lead the world.

Again, NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. We are circling the drain. See y'all in the pipes.

I've read through the article and all of the comments, and what I see is relief that the inevitable has been postponed. However, it is still inevitable, and to paraphrase liberal ted; "Welcome to the Titanic, have another drink" not just the wealthy, but all of us will sink!

Yes, what a victory for the Democrats! More free money for everyone in government! What's another trillion dollars debt every year to them? There are no consequences if you have a money printing press, right? Be irresponsible and spend, spend, spend, tax, tax, there are no consequences are there?

Very disappointing. Had hoped we'd have the intestinal fortitude as a nation to see this through to a complete default/reboot of our government... instead we chickened out and issued the government another credit card. We are fools.

Glad he is not controlled by the tea party.
