Those events are tragic for the people involved. If we know someone personally than it does effect us. However there is nothing we can do about them. Games, Movies, Hikes in mountains are things we do to get through the mundane of life. The lord told Brigham Young in 136 of Doctrine and Covenants to dance when weary.

When the flood of 76 hit Rexburg President Kimball said to dance as well and have 4th rodeo. We do some of those things to relax our minds from all the negative in the world.

I have read about those events you mentioned and more!!!
But then again, West Valley City is in a very isolated
part of the world so I can see how missed it.
