@Sportfanatic - you might upset a few people!!! lol

It's hard to accurately rank the top 25 teams in the state when you have 6 classifications and many teams will never play each other head to head.

Also, does anyone know how the rankings are calculated? Is it coaches only, media only, coaches and media combined or is it a numerical equation??? This would in understanding why teams are ranked where they are.

In regards to East: East is a strong team that has made the playoffs the last 3 years and lost to the eventual champion the last 2 years. The last 2 years and also this year...East enters the season with a lot of hype as the "team to beat in Utah and 4A". However, that hype end at the hands of Logan and Timpview and until East wins a championship...questions will remain. The East win over Alta was impressive...but only time will tell how impressive depending on Alta's season. Alta has Lone Peak this week and could easily lose and actually might enter region play at 0-4.

Preseason and Week 1 rankings are always difficult. They get easier as the season and playoffs progress!!!

Sorry to all, but until Jordan loses to an instate school, they're the best team in the state. They are currently ranked #25 in the nation. Here's your top ten for the state of Utah:

    1. Jordan (66.7)
    2. Timpview (58.1)
    3. East (53.8)
    4. Syracuse (51.9)
    5. Lone Peak (45.8)
    6. Alta (45.6)
    7. Highland (44.6)
    8. Mountain Crest (44.1)
    9. Bingham (43.2)
    10. Logan (42.6)

Last year is last year. and thats why they have the preseason rankings but things should be open to change depending on your current win status and winning fashion. Team difficulty such as an Alta powerhouse. And a struggled home game Timpview just had. STATEMENT GAMES

I was very impressed with how East beat Alta. I'm not sold on Timpview, and who would be after week 1? But why should East be ranked ahead of Timpview? Timpview is the defending champ and thrashed East last year when East was supposed to be the #1 team. Until Timpview loses, or East wins the title, they haven't earned a #1 ranking.

Pretty sure East has one of the hardest schedules a Utah team has seen in a long time 3 teams in the nations top 100.

It's not just the fact that they one last Friday it's the fashion they did it in.

They are a serious powerhouse this year. Give them credit where credit is due.

I'm not saying they have made it yet. But credit has for sure been earned in week one!!!!

You are correct about Syracuse's QB and receivers. It's a good thing the QB who you saw against Box Elder is Syracuse's back up. Their starting QB has been out with a leg injury, and will be returning shortly. Syracuse is going to need him if they want to remain in the #2 spot for 5A. The starting QB can run, throw, and is a good decision maker, which will give the Syracuse OC more options.

Does Logan really have a good oc or did Northridges defense really stink it up. Or did Logan's defense stink it up too. As stated it was the qb's first varsity game and snaps. That's all you can say is he is scared to run the ball. If you we're at the game you would of saw it was a sack, he didn't attempt to run the ball. Yes the receiving group needs some work and that will come as well. The OC is awesome. Just because they didn't throw for a lot or run a lot doesn't mean he is bad. I think last year they put a blind fold on him for the whole season and then decided to take it off for the championship game. You said the defense was just average? How many yards did your Highland boys give up against a below average MC team? How many touchdowns were given to them in form a pass? I have noticed on other threads your just as positive there as well. I will save you a seat on Friday and we can become good friends.

Were you at the game? Do You know anything about this team?? Their QB was 8-25 maybe, but it should have been 18-25. Lots of drops. That will be fixed. A sophomore, playing his first varsity game had the jitters and was high and wide the first quarter, but settled down and played decent the rest of the way. Kinda agree about the OC, too conservative, but with a defense like they have, he can afford to be. If you knew anything about this team, you would know the situation at QB. Obviously, DN understands. Number 2, Maybe not yet, but could be. Defense No.1 in the state. Stopping Watson and Gunter will not happen again this season.

Goodness let's hold off on the East #1 bandwagon. It was one week. I heard nothing but East East East last year and yet when they played Timpview it wasn't that close. East has arguably had the best talent in 4a or been the favorite at least 3 times in the last 6 or 7 years yet always fall short. Let's not overreact over one week or even regular season. I want to see East get it done for once in the playoffs.

2A Thoughts: I know you can't read too much from the first week, but after seeing the scores I have to wonder:
    1) Are S. Summit, Beaver, and Grand really that good? While the scores were impressive, they came against 3 teams that were a combined 3-27 last year. So, we should get a better sense after this week when S.S. plays Morgan & Grand plays Emery. We'll have to wait until 9/13 for Beaver though, when they play S.S.
    2) Is the youth & inexperience going to cause Millard and S.J. to drop as much as week 1 looked? While the final scores were't close, SJ was only down by a touchdown going into the 4th. Millard will have to see if they can redeem themselves against Delta.
But, just based on week 1, here are my top 5:
    1. S.Summit
    2. Grand
    3. Beaver
    4. SJ
    5. Millard

My apologies to the other 2A teams. Can't comment on all the teams due to lack of space, so I just discuss the top 5. Good luck to all the teams this week. Play safe and have fun.

Should be as follows for 5A and 4A:

    2. Lone Peak
    3. Jordan
    4. Brighton
    5. Alta

    Class 4A

    1. East
    2. Timpview
    3. Highland
    4. Logan
    5. Woods Cross

    one last comment goaggies1,

Check the stats on D-news. You said the QB did pretty good. He went 8-25 Passing that is 32% completion. Rushed once for negative 9 yards. This tells me he is scared to run and the OC knows it. 86 yards passing, pathetic. My point is confirmed, no QB (can't run or pass), no Recievers (no hands), no OC (go watch Logan HS, they have a great OC); equals a loss against Highland and any other decent team. The possitive is the schedule is easy in Region 1. "Overrated" now second in the top 25 behind Bingham. Wow!!! Many teams better including Highland, Jordon, Brighton the list goes on. The right spot is about #12 if you do a honest evaluation. Keep it real.

Titan's QB would not be able to start a snap on any other 5A team in Utah. Defense will only win 6 or 7 games max.

Yes, if he was the same OC last year he laid an egg in the Championship game. The "Cuse" should have at least one state championship in the last three years with their talent, Defense, and support. Just, no offensive brain power. Sorry talent can only take you so far. Lacking an OC, like I said. But, this year many more holes; QB and Receivers. Just saying. You will be Zero for two on Thur. and Fri.

Chucky is the best in the state, but not enough supporting cast in the backfield this year.

    Pig Skin,

The studs your talking about are all the skill positions players from last year. Yes they are gone. Great group of kids that played last year. So last year the oc was a stud? Same oc this year. Help me understand your logic. Dude this is pre-season. Their quarterback is learning the system. If you saw the game he did pretty good. They will be fine. About the Ag's and items. No worry their as well. No star on the front line of the d. Beware of Chucky. He can do a lot. It will be a great game Thursday and Friday. Go Ag's and Cuse that will refuse to go down.

I would have to say Syracuse is well coached. In their four or five years of existence the Titans have played in one championship game and made the semi-finals another year. For a new school that is remarkable and a sign of good coaching...

First of all, just keeping it real; like the Aggies losing on Thursday on the Hill. Secondly, Alta and Mountain Crest went through the same transition from last year.

Yes, they have solid Defense and Defensive game plan; BUT:

This years Titans are not last year Titans; all the athletes/studs are gone. Syracuse has no chance with a QB that can't run or pass and an Offense play calling that is more predictable then the Sun. Any decent Defense in the state can stop Syracuse's Offense. Only telling the Truth. The "Cuse" will blow a "Fuse" this Friday against the Rams; trust me. I hope they win, but I also voted for Romney for President. How did that end up. Support the Titans, just keep your expectations realistic. At least a Winning record this year is not a bad thing; 6-3 or 7-2 if your lucky. I think I am making Syracuse look smart by being truthful.

How does East jump Bingham who was #1 to start the season and dominated the team they played 42-7?

    Aug. 26, 2013 3:42 p.m.

    Pig Skin Fan,

Your making the people from the Syracuse area not look so smart. Did you go to the game Friday night in Brigham city? I didn't think so. Did you go to the game that Mountain Crest and Highland plays on Thursday night? I didn't think so as we'll. I know highland has a big team and that's just the way the "Cuse" like them. Ask Alta how that went for them last year. Wait ask Bingham as well. Even though they are bigger doesn't mean they are better. I know you think Box Elder are a bunch of grey haired seniors that can't play, but they might take region 5 this year by storm. Did you also notice Box Elders offense only had 59 total yards for the whole game. So before you bags on your neighbors for playing ball maybe you need to look at the big picture before you bury them. Go Cuse!!!!!!!

Should be as follows for 5A and 4A:

    1. Bingham
    2. Jordan
    3. Lone Peak
    4. Brighton
    5. Pleasant Grove

    Class 4A

    1. East
    2. Highland
    3. Timpview
    4. Logan
    5. Woods Cross

#5 on does not really matter because the State Champs will come from one of the top four schools, guaranteed.

Syracuse is "Overrated" and absolutly lose to Highland Rams on Friday. Offence, very predictable and lacks coaching and talent (QB, Recievers, and OC). Sorry, Syracuse you will go down to a bigger and better team. Defense will be tough but not enough to win Region. Sorry for the Truth. Highland's D-line will dominate, best in the state. Duck and Cover!

How is East still #2 after the beat down they put on Alta? Timpview struggled at home with a team that was picked to be #5 in their region...
