This opinion would be great if it was truly what the President really wants to accomplish but indications so far do not back up this theory. So far the grand bargain has no specifics and is just a rehashing of old generalities.
If Obama really wants to help us then he needs to just get out of our way and let us succeed. We can do it better without his help.

Obama's trickle up poverty (re-distribution) has destroyed the middle class.

It is not the job of government to create "classes". It is not the job of government to create jobs. It is not the job of government to redistribute wealth.

The job of the federal government is listed in Article 1, Section 8. Those duties listed are the only duties that the federal government is authorized to handle. All other duties are to be left to the States or to the people.

Obama does not have a clue about his responsibilities or of the limits of his "power" that were placed on him by the people. Ignorant citizens have allowed him to get away with programs that are not authorized by the Constitution. A lazy Court has sought popularity instead of doing its job to defend the Constitution against illegal legislation. John Roberts may be popular, but he has failed America in his position as Chief Justice.

The "middle class" will prosper when government gets out of the way. When government stops taking the lion's share of our wealth from us, that wealth will build prosperity.

Taking an additional 18% - 24% for Obamacare will bankrupt the middle-class.

Obama does not want a middle class. Communism is about the privledged few and the rest of us as in the masses.

OK so clearly what is happening here is someone told Obama that he needed a slogan for his Presidency. Roosevelt had the "New Deal", Johnson had the "Great Society", Kennedy had the "New Generation". So now Obamas team has come up with the "Grand Bargain". Pretty weak. Sounds more like it belongs on a used car lot than as some major public policy. Anyway, Obama is pretty much in neutral until the 2014 elections, where he hopes the Democrats will win both houses of Congress. If that happens, he will go wild pushing his socialist (Grand Bargain) policies. If the Dems do not take both houses, he will cost the country billions in vacation expenses and play more golf than Tiger Woods.

Re: "We all should hope President Obama is successful in helping bring back America's middle class."

Oh, we all do. But sad experience has shown, time, and time again, hope is not a plan.

The President's best shot at helping bring back the middle class is to STOP the "helping."

Everything he's proposing is calculated to destroy, not to bring back prosperity.

Big Government is a destroyer -- of liberty, prosperity, decency, the environment, race relations, and particularly, of the middle class.

NOT a helper.

Sorry Conservative republican leaders beat him to it.

The downturn started in the 80's which is when a b movie actor was fooled into giving it away and creating the torrent up economics that they still tout as successful. (see mtnmans comment) Top down was and continues to be a failure, hopefully it can be reversed before the 1% owns 99% of the wealth.

Typical: Professor Davis writes an insightful column, and the first five responses on-line are 'but he's a communist!!!!!!' argle-blargle.

Obama is already restoring the middle class. I'm a firmly middle class guy who saw my savings evaporate and saw my job nearly disappear when Bush was president. My savings are back, my mortgage is OK, my business is doing better. I thank heaven for Obama.

Obama is helping himself, his union friends, Soros, Solyndra, and many other "favorite" people/companies to the treasury. He destroyed the pension funds of policemen and teachers when he took their shares at GM and Chrysler and gave those companies to the auto unions and to Canada.

He has done everything possible to destroy the middle class. He has put fear, uncertainty and doubt in the minds of every businessman. Those businessmen cannot formulate pay packages and prices until they know how much the ObamaCare TAX is going to affect them. Hundreds of thousands of people have lost their full time jobs because Obama used FUD to mess with the private sector. Obama hypes Amazon as the new goal for American workers. How would he survive on $12 an hour? Would he still play golf several times a week? Would he still eat food prepared by a French Chef? Would he fly around in his "private jet"? Just how would he live on $12 an hour? Yet, he expects us to live on that wage and to thank him for it.

He is so far out of touch that his name might just as well be Marie Antoinette.

Nope the only person who said anything remotely like "let hem eat cake" was the guy who said "47% of Americans don't matter"

Interesting though, that only my friends who are addicted to hate radio believe the "End is Near" and live in fear and envy of the president at the same time.

Only 1255 days until Obama is out of office?

'Only'?

That's 1255 days too many.

It would not surprise me at all if Obama uses some kind of manufactured problem/crisis to justify him staying in power, essentially setting himself up as a king over America.

No, I'm not joking.

And after November 2012, unfortunately, the majority of Americans trust the guy.

What a disgusting mess....

Oh, America, America, how the mighty have fallen!

@Mountanman – “Obama's trickle up poverty (re-distribution) has destroyed the middle class.”

But he’s been a boon for corporate America – greatest stock market rally and highest stock valuations in history. It’s a bit baffling why Republicans don’t love this guy…

And as I recall, on January 19, 2009 the middle class was on life support.

@ Happy Valley. Conservatives are not in power and the middle class continues to decline so its obviously Mr. Obama and the party in power's fault! Blaming conservatives would be like blaming the victim for the crime, which liberals are good at doing.

Restoring the middle class ....from what? Last time I checked the middle class were doing pretty well until Barack introducted Obamacare and now the middle class are having to work two part time jobs instead of one full time job and add to that an insane expolsion in health insurance premium cost. Yes sir..by the time Barack and his progressive friends are done the middle class will be reduced to the lower class. Of couse the goal of any good communist is to emliminate the middle class altogether and Barack is well on his way. Plenty of 'wealth redistribution' left to force upon us.

Richard, you are assuming Obama wants to "restore the middle class". After watching him destroy the middle class for the last 5 1/2 years, what makes you think he wants to restore it? Michelle said he would be a "transformational" president and Obama himself said he wants to "change America". I would say he has succeeded in taking us from "super-power" status, to a European Economy quite well. Like another president once said, "Mission Accomplished". Welcome to the "new normal".

Mountanman and Patriot:

Sorry but your statements are not based on facts. When Obama took office the economy was in free fall resulting in the highest unemployment in recent history. And no serious economist blames Obama for that. In addition the housing market and property values tanked, hurting the middle class most of all. At least unemployment rates are improving and home values are on the rise. I think you failed to mention that.

re:louie

Sorry but you failed to mention Obamacare Louie. When Obama took office health care premiums were much less and there was no mandate for corporations (business, school districts etc...) to force the funding of health insurance or cut the number of hours your employees can work. This single thing - the forced cutting of work hours - is causing all business owners to HATE Obamacare including unions now. Barack - as you recall - told us all that everyone would see their premiums go DOWN by $2500 per year (remember Louie?) and he also promised the cost would not eclipse 800 billion. Insurance premiums have NOT gone down but instead have sky rocketed UP and the cost by our own CBO is now set at nearly 3 trillion dollars!!! Triple Louie!! And by the way - our national debt was 9 trillion when Barack took office and it now sets at over 17 trillion!! You do the math. Poverty has sky rocketed up under Obama and food stamps are at an all time high. The housing 'bubble' won't last Louie - sorry. Interest rates and huge inventory of existing homes created the bubble. No one thinks this is long term.

louie, with all due respect, the middle class has NOT rebounded at all. According to the Huffington Post (of all places), mean incomes for the middle class continues to decrease and has decreased by almost 60% in the last decade with no end in site. In other words, the middle class has NOT been helped by Obama! You can argue about whose fault this is but clearly Obama has done nothing to stop the slide!
