These traditions of the men's military academies and high school training have been so powerful from the father's traditions and upbringing for decades. Alcohol in the military is not only hosted at formal occasions but you have to request another non-alcoholic goblet for your toast for many different dumb reasons at these gatherings. Cigars were supposed to be smoked when the smoking lamp was lit. The Grog bowl was visited and a person had to drink from it for violating some form of protocol at a gathering and was even worse when it was an informal gathering.

Respect for women may be one thing but with alcoholic events it is disrespect for the other of your same gender if you don't drink.

Spartans from academies have too extensive of a history to change overnight and haven't done so with more regulations and procedures. If it was good enough for my great-grandfather, it is good enough for the current plebe.

It has to start at the top down, civilian/military within the ranks of the Department of Defense. The tail-hook debacle involved hundreds of officers with many of those women.
