During the Clinton Monica situation and Clinton's eyes off of the South Asia radar and his own survival, the nuclear potential of both India and Pakistan became relevant after the Russians drug their tail out of Afghanistan. The Taliban had power in the region and that is when Sharif was in power but out of power in 1999.

President Clinton had other things on his mind. The alliance we had to pick up with the General Musharraf after 9/11 was tenuous. We should have been doing something about the Taliban earlier and they were trying to thwart this election but at least Sharif and it appears the Army general may work together in this battle against the Taliban, this time.

Hopefully, we will work with them better than we did during the Osama Bin Laden takeout when we entered their military circle without their knowledge. It is hard to believe that Osama could have lived 2 blocks away and the top military officers not know it.
