Ebert's film reviews would often intrigue me enough to go see a movie I otherwise would have passed up. Sometimes I hated movies he liked, sometimes the reverse was true. But in a business where some film critics are more interested in trying to sound witty than in telling readers something useful about a film, Ebert tried to say why a movie struck him the way it did. When he disliked a film, he didn't mince words. But when he liked what he saw, he was generous with praise.
