It was very disappointing to see the All-State selections. When will the Des-News and coaches STOP selecting these All-State teams solely on what happens during the week of the state tournament. You have several "first" team players that in my opinion should be 2nd team AT BEST. (More likely Honorable Mention). Just because your team gets to the state championship does not mean you have 1st team all state players. We all know one team had the easiest road to the finals. Some of the 1st team players selected have stats that aren't even in the same gym as some of the 2nd team selections. In fact, All FIVE of the 2nd team selection had better stats than at least one of the 1st team selection. This award needs to be based on the entire season, not what happens in the state tournament. No offense to the Provo player, but is she really a 1st team all state player on a 4-17 team? I don't think so. Great job D-News covering high school sports in Utah. I will give you that much.
@Hoopcoach, You need to be consistent with your argument. First you say that just because a team makes it to the championship doesn't mean they have 1st team all-state players, then you say a girl shouldn't be 1st team because her team wasn't good enough. All state should be those that play best against the best competition in the State. Great stats on a team that doesn't go very far in the State tournament doesn't mean they are All State either. Stats can be very misleading, if not simply counted incorrectly. Ball hogs that play no defense can end up with good stats. Or teams with only 1 good player can have great stats because they have no one else to turn to for points, so they take more shots. Coaches vote seems like the only fair way to do it, as unfair as that may seem to someone who thinks their daughter is the best ball player around and doesn't understand why all the coaches can't see it.
Hey Joe don't know squat. You said the same thing I did! My whole point is if you look at the entire season and not just the state tournament, we would have a completely different 1st team All-State. Just because you may average 15 ppg doesn't mean you are a ball hog. Someone has to lead the team.
@Hoopcoach - why don't you show some respect to these 1st team all-state girls? obviously they earned the recognition through the votes of the coaches. Sorry your daughter didn't make the cut. Obviously these votes were based on season play as well as state tournament play as evidenced by the Provo player making 1st team All-State. Provo HS didn't make it to the state tournament.
@Hoopcoach - AGAIN, you contradict yourself. Why don't you show respect to the 1st team all-state selections? Obviously they deserved the selection as they were voted on by the coaches who have seen all of these girls play and know their skill level and leadership. Sorry that your daughter didn't make the cut. It appears that votes were given based on season play AS WELL AS state tournament play as evidenced by the Provo player making 1st team. Provo HS did not make it to the state tournament.
