The Republican Party is on the wrong side of history AND on the wrong side of the Constitution on this one.
The 100+ prominent Republicans who have so far signed that amicus brief in favor of gay marriage have it right: same-sex marriage **promotes** family values by allowing the children of gay couples to grow up in two-parent homes, and it **advances** the conservative values of limited government and maximizing individual freedom. True conservatives ought to be supporting it, not fighting it.
Heck, even Dick Cheney supports gay marriage. And I've heard that the younger attendees at the CPAC going on right now (the Conservative Political Action Conference) are also bringing in some significant support for the issue. With Senator Portman now announcing his support as well, and also considering the Republican amicus brief, maybe the party is finally starting to come to its senses. We can hope so, anyway!
