Laws requiring gun ownership are obviously message laws that are (presumably) not meant to be enforced. They do send a good message however. That you shouldn't depend on others 100% for your or your families protection. The police aren't always going to be able to be there on time. If the home invader decides to, they can kill you before the police get there.
For a gun to be a net benefit to you or tour family, gun safety rules need to be followed. Otherwise the gun will be more of a liability than a benefit. If you decide to invest in a gun, also invest some time to learn the rules of gun safety and it's a good idea too to nest in some gun training.
