Say What?,
You may not have the time to follow such things but I make it a point to do so. According to the 2012 Edition Of America's Best Graduate Schools published by U.S. News and World Report here are some of the rankings that the U of U achieved among America's Universities:
Math #30, Chemistry #36, Biomedical/bioengineering #22, Computer Science #39, Family medicine #15. It seems to me that the U is setting its priorities exactly in the right direction as you suggest that it should. Being one of America's top Graduate School Universities is exactly why the U was invited to join the PAC 12 in the first place. The article and editorial failed to point out that conferences like the PAC 12 are more than just athletic conferences.
Re: ". . . conferences like the PAC 12 are more than just athletic conferences."
Yeah. And beauty pageants like Miss America are more than just beauty contests.
And college academics, like college football, are about more than money.
It starts in High School. Check out the football fields at most Utah high schools and compare that to the math lab or perhaps the physics texts (actually the schools can't afford a physics text). America is dominated by entertainment - compare the average major league baseball salary to say ...the average teachers salary or even college professor's salary. Do you know any professors who sign a $100 million contract? America is falling far behind China and other countries in math and physics and that trend will continue because in America - entertainment rules!!
