One has to wonder how many Catholics have been excommunicated for less grievous sins than covering up child abuse?
I don't know the answer. Maybe few to no excommunications take place. But I've heard Catholic leaders publically say who should or should not take communion. Archbishop Sean O'Malley said in 2004 that Catholic politicians who do not vote in line with church teachings "shouldn't dare come to Communion."
Maybe there is no precedent for a Cardinal not to participate in a Papal conclave. But could not Cardinal Mahoney recuse himself?
Just seems everybody should be held to the same standard.
