Many of the events at the Olympics have a professional avenue. I mean, even beach volleyball has a pro circuit. Wrestling has none. It embodies the spirit of amateur athletics, which is kind of the point right? Very sad. Wrestlers are among the hardest working athletes. Too bad we will instead get to watch wussu or whatever that new sport is.
Reading between the lines it was a political decision, and the wrestling supporters did not lobby as well as the pentathalon supporters. Perhaps due to the relative wealth of the respective supporters?
Wrestling started in Greece for the first Olympic, not a good thing to drop this. Why not get rid of this "rhythmic gymnastics ribbon" - that is not sport and same thing in swimming pool "rhythmic water dancers". I wonder if they take away shot put or pole vault which I don't think they will do that or could I be wrong about that.
SME is right...to see which sports get the axe and why, just follow the money.
I agree with DEW what a strange decision. I am afraid SME is right its not about amateur sports its about money.
