Smart man. People who find out they've been duped tend to become disaffected.

If your comment applies to David Whitmer, I disagree with part of your assessment. I believe he was a smart man and was regarded as a good man. He had significant disagreements with Joseph Smith, but I don't think he ever felt duped. David Whitmer never denied his testimony of the Book of Mormon as one of the witnesses when given every opportunity to do so.
