re: freedom in 2017It was the big story on Headline News Thurs
morning and all I could think was so what. What is the worse that
could happen Tom Brady can't make it to a Press Conference or Wall St shuts
down? How exactly is that bad?
As mentioned below, there are people that will suffer terribly, often through no
fault of their own, from this storm. Some have no home to go to. Some kids
have no home to go to and get ignored as well.
@freedom where in the article does it say anything about north easterners
thinking the world is shutting down? I think maybe your problem is not north
easterners but your own internal biases. I lived in the north east and I can
tell you as a general rule they a fare less self obsessed then most utahns.
VST: "Ask yourself one question; is global warming man-caused? If so, what
are your FACTS to back up your premise that global warming is anthropometrically
caused?"The facts are abundant. Isotopic analysis
of the carbon and oxygen atoms making up atmospheric CO2 reveal that most of the
increase in atmospheric CO2 comes from carbon that has been locked away
somewhere for millions of years, which could only come from fossil fuel deposits
that are then combusted with "young" oxygen, as is found in the air all
around us today. This proves conclusively that present-day combustion of
fossilized hydrocarbon deposits (natural gas, coal, and oil) is definitely the
source of the elevated levels of atmospheric CO2 currently being measured. These measurements have been replicated and validated by researchers
across the globe. Human combustion of CO2 is the primary contributor
to increases in atmospheric CO2. Those increases are accelerating at rates never
before seen in the last several hundred thousand years.Atmospheric
levels of CO2 change rates of heat retention. That's been established for
100+ years.Higher heat retention in the air warms the oceans and
ground, and that changes climate. And it's changing _fast_.The
science is clear.
Still thinking of spring:I recall your yellow cotton dress foaming
like a wave on the ground around your kneesAnd birds like tender babies in
your hands...Climate change passion is flowing like a river through
the sky....And now it's melting in the darkwith it's sweet
cream icing flowing downSomeone left the climate change cake out in
the rainand I don't think that they can take itcause it took so
long to bake it and they'll never have that recepi againOH
Oatmeal: thank you for your reality check. A good reminder that our humanity is
more important that arguing over weather theories.
VST: Thank you for your astute 11:22am post. For me, there is no question that
global warming is occurring. 10,000 years ago central Illinois was covered by a
layer of ice hundreds of feet thick. Although there have been periods of rapid
warming and cooling since then -- including about 200 years that allowed the
Vikings to establish viable colonies in northern Canada and Greenland -- overall
the temps have been warming. I know that because the glaciers are extinct here.
Now there are those who theorize that it is a man-made condition. There may be
some merit to this idea. After all, there is a tremendous amount of hot air
coming out of Springfield. Nonetheless, I am dubious. Even if the current
apparently speeding rise in global temps is anthropomorphically caused, we
essentially would need to stop all pollution causing activities today in order
to turn back the tide. That is not going to happen on either a personal,
community, national or global level.
Spring was never waiting for us girl, It ran one step ahead as we followed
in the dance.
The US is the only country I know of where right and left both don't agree
that the climate is getting warmer. The Conservative parties in Europe and Asia
all believe we have a problem and back various solutions. Here, because the
Democrats say it is so, the Republicans automatically must say it isn't.
Why not get out in front of this, and figure out better alternatives
for how to address it, rather than just burying your heads in the sand.
Otherwise, we will let the Dems take the lead on this just like they did on
civil rights, the environment, health care, energy solutions, etc. You can't make a conclusion based on individual weather events, but
rather on patterns. Look at the glaciers and Arctic ice cap. What if it is
manmade? Do we honestly think we can just keep using cars that burn oil produced
by such friends as Russia, Venezuela, and Iran? I don't even
understand why we're having this debate. You people who are driven by fear
and conspiracy see threats now even in the weather.
To tell the truth.. I am not sure where I stand on Global warming. There is some
stuff that makes sense to me and other stuff that seems more fiction then real.
But, I do trust the scriptures and one of the sign of the 2nd coming
of the Savior is that the weather will be a mess!!! Guess what? This is coming
true!Scary - but not surprised!
@freedom in 2017I'm pretty sure they cover just about every storm
with 2ft of snow and wind gusts to almost hurricane force forecasted.@Mountanman"Does this inconsistency shake your belief in man made
global warming?"No, because there are more warm anomalies than
cold anomalies globally and in 2012 we had the warmest La Nina year on record.
"Where I live, we are having "normal" temperatures for
this time of the year, not warmer not colder. As we can see, in New England,
there is above normal snowfall there. "I would've thought
Idaho would be below average since Salt Lake City had its coldest January since
1949 (then again the inversions played a large role in that). New England
snowfall doesn't necessarily mean it's colder there, just wetter.@Blue"including incidences of harsh winters in some
places"What do you mean by harsh? If you mean cold weather then
that's not something global warming predicts. If you mean the potential for
heavier snows in winter storms in areas, that one is predicted (though it's
a delicate balance between heavier precip events and it still being cold enough
for that precip to be snow).
Mountanman: Are you saying there is no global warming, or just that it is not
manmade? I can forgive you for the manmade part, but the evidence is clear that
there is global warming and that ice is melting at an alarming rate. No hoax!
The predictions from a warming planet: bigger storms! Now, global means
literally that, the globe. It's nice to pick a place that's hotter
than average or colder than average, but the planet, as a whole, has warmed over
the last 75 years. What happens next? Ice age. It will happen. When is the
I read the headline and immediately predicted this would turn into a global
warming debate without one shred of empathy for what three feet of snow in one
storm can do to a human population. People could die from this storm.
@ Blue, you are wrong! Last month it was minus 40 in Russia, much colder than
normal for this time of year for them. Where I live, we are having
"normal" temperatures for this time of the year, not warmer not colder.
As we can see, in New England, there is above normal snowfall there. Normal is
an interesting word, isn't it?
Mountanman, where are there examples of "lower than normal temps" in the
context of global climate?Answer - nowhere._Weather_ can
bounce around all over the place, and the more energy available to drive
weather, the more extreme the weather can be. Heat waves in Australia, three
feet of snow in New York, and drought in the midwest. Those are weather
extremes, and global warming science predicts those extremes will become larger
and more frequent. Which is exactly what's happening._Climate_
refers to decades-long trends, and the _climate_ trend globally is towards
higher global average temps. You've got to let the science into
@ Blue. Let's see, when we have warmer than normal temps, that's proof
there is man made global warming but when we have colder than normal temps, it
still proof? 20 years from now when this hoax has finally been put to rest, I
suppose there will be another attempt to "save the planet" that
doesn't need saving.
Mountanman,Good grief.Look, 2012 is the new officially
hottest year on record for the United States. It's also a record-setting
year in terms of the extremes of weather experienced.Australia,
currently experiencing its summer season, is setting new records for heat and
their weather service has had to add new colors to their weather maps to
encompass the new extremes in temps they're seeing.Global
warming science makes two predictions: 1) overall global temps will rise. 2)
because there's more energy being pumped into global weather systems,
weather events are more likely to be more powerful than average - including
incidences of harsh winters in some places and prolonged droughts in others. Both predictions are now abundantly proven to be accurate, and global
climate change is in fact happening faster than the "worst-case"
scenarios offered by climate scientists just a decade ago. Please at
least try to let well-documented scientific reality inform your decisions.
Climate change. Either it's happening in my back yard today, or it's
It needs to be pointed out that last summer we had warmer than normal temps in
some areas and now we are seeing abnormal amounts of cold weather and snow in
some areas! Does this inconsistency shake your belief in man made global
warming? It does mine, because seeing is more believable than what Al Gore and
others wrote in a book or published in a film for massive profits! Follow the
money and you will discover the root of any cause!
The world shuts down because the NE gets snow. Only northeasterners think that
the universe revolves around them and that anyone really cares. Let's cover
every snowfall in the US.
