"The militants said they cut off his hand in accordance with Islamic law. Alzouma, though, says to subject him and his children to a life of poverty is not in accordance with his faith."
Unfortunately the punishment IS in accordance with Islamic law. The Koran specifically states that cutting off the hand is the punishment for stealing.
He didn't exactly get a chance to defend himself in a court of law, though, did he? His accusers claim "witnesses" saw him break into a store. Whether that was really true or not, who knows? Where was the evidence? These militants appoint themselves judge, jury, and executioner.
And yet we are still told to believe that this is a religion of peace.
