Comments about ‘Japan 787 probe finds thermal runaway in battery’

The real problem with the Boeing 787 -- everything was outsourced.

Lithium Ion batteries are known to have thermal runaway. Given this, and given that this is an airplane where hundreds of lives are at stake, I am wondering why this kind of battery was used.

Here is a possible fix,

impliment a system to monitor the temperature of the battery which will cool the bettery in the event of thermal runaway.

or

make the battery so that it is in several pieces, each separated thermally from the other pieces and surroundings, so that if one piece suffers thermal runaway, that piece doesn't affect the others.

suggestion

impliment both suggestions above, because two lines of defense are better than one. The possibility always exists that one line of defense may fail.

Another possibility is utilize a different type of battery.

In airplane designs there isn't a lot of extra space. It may be difficult to impliment any of these suggestions without a major redesign of a lot of other stuff, lets hope not.

It was either our head of transportation or the FAA that said he would not let this problem keep him from flying on a 787. When he said that I remember thinking that was dumb. Then the 787 was grounded. My point is when things like this happen, use your own head, use your own logic, don't be overly trusting.

As I've already posted -
It was designed and built by out-sourced suppliers.

Read up on it.

BTW - as a 22 year Boeing Engineer, and having worked on the 787 since the very beginning, we knew that becasue of all the extensive out-sourcing, that this would happen [and will continue to happen for many more years, and for many more problems yet to come].

When Boeing held a contest to "name the plane" back in 2005
The idea was supposed to be "_________liner" - ala, Stratoliner.

Although "DreamLiner" was selected,
We Engineers proposed our own names;

The "one-liner" (aka, the joke)
The End of the Liner
The Soup Liner
The Garbage Liner

Management didn't think we were very funny.
