After seeing another Layton Christian blowout, I couldn't sit silent. In gymnasiums all over the state, the announcers begin by reminding everyone to show good sportsmanship. Does that not mean the teams and coaches playing in the game? Is there any good sportsmanship that comes out of a 109-17 victory? What about a 111-23 victory? Seriously? I have been around high school basketball for a lot of years. I know that you can't tell your kids to quit, but I have personally seen a 60 point blowout by this coach where his team was pressing and fast breaking with starters on the floor until the final buzzer. There is something a coach can do about that. I have seen coaches slow the game down so as not to be us by 40 and I have seen our coaches do the same so as not to blow out other teams. There is a much better life lesson learned by that than by an 88 or 92 point win. Disgusting!
On the surface your point sounds good about LCA however these teams are so bad that only by holding the ball for minutes on end could you keep the score down. further the starters only played about 8 minutes total. second LCA begged for only 1 game but these teams insisted on playing twice.SO LCA starters only get to play half a season.LCA only pressed at the start and was forced back to 1a these last two years by the uhsaa.i hear you but its a no win situation for LCA even playing starters so little.
Also the entire varsity for these teams played the entire jv game and are on empty for the varsity game
I still believe that there are no good lessons learned from a game like this. Coaches can slow a game down by not pressing and no fast breaks. It doesn't mean you have to stand and hold the ball. Just because you can win by 92 points, doesn't mean that you should.
you are correct. nothing good comes out of these games for anybody. thanks for talking.
High School sports in Utah are a joke. Sports are for one purpose to give those students who have the ability a chance to become student athletes in college. Of course you should go for the win all the time! Blame UHSAA not the coach its about poor alignment. If you want to play for fun play Junior Jazz!
Layton Christian will probably win the 1a title again this year and all of the rural schools will cry foul.
JD: LCA may win and if they do how would you feel about that keeping in mind they wanted to stay in 2a and was forced down. They are going back to 2a next year.
I agree that LCA is playing with the hand they were dealt but the reality is that many of the rural schools complain that the playing field isn't level. For example many South Sevier fans complain that Wasatch Academy is possibly in their way for another state tourney title. It should be interesting next year with both LCA and Wasatch Academy both playing in 2A again.
JD: thanks for your well stated response. For the record I support SS in their current set of dynamics.
