A little different tune now Mr Riley...who at the beginning of the year into the start of conference play was singing the praises of a much more "talented" Utah team that would not have ANY of the games like the Stanford one this year. That garbage non-conference schedule really prepped the Utes for another stellar Pac-12 run at the cellar. On the flipside they do have time to turn it around to end on a positive...be interesting to see if that's how it plays out. Right now, the only reason to go to the Huntsman Center is to watch the talent from the visiting teams. Sad
"So why is this week so important in the big picture? The rebuild of this Utah program is still in progress; it's only Year 2."
Actually, Bill, it's Year 8 since Majerus left, but who's counting?
After exhausting the talent left behind by Majerus for a good season in 2005, and getting a momentary reprieve from losing seasons in 2008, this is Utah's fourth straight losing season, and sixth in the last seven years.
Three of Utah's starters are seniors, so regardless of what happens this week, the Utes will continue their endless rebuilding project next season.
When will coach small k realize that his team might have to score more than 65 points in order to win most games?
Just get this over with and lets start talking football.
Coach Whit knows how to take us to the top of the country, because he already did so. He'll get us there again within 2-3 years.
Go Utes!
What are the expectations? I think coach K gets his guys to play hard, which is why they are in some games when the opponent doesn't. Based case scenario is that in a few years coach K gets his team to the middle of the PAC 12. The talent level is getting better but not good enough to challenge for the conference championship. There are a lot of similarities between coach K and Boylen. Top level talent is not going to want to play for coach K. They are not headed to the point where they can challenge for the MWC championship. So why the fuss.
I agree with Chris B - move on. At least in football they have a chance.
I'm pretty sure we've already seen what this team is made of.
"Rebuilding - to restore to a previous state."
Just so I understand, when we're talking about rebuilding the Utes are we trying to get them back the way the team was under Boylen or under Majerus?
Last year and this year do not feel like rebuilding to me. They feel like new all time lows. Most Ute fans would be ecstatic with Boylen's W-L record at this point.
Utes looked good against Washington, but it's hard to find any other light in this tunnel. I truly hope U can get it turned around.
I feel badly for all ute fans. While joining the PAC 12 was so exciting, It guaranteed you would experience far more losing than winning. You just have to ask Arizona and Arizona state how easy it is to win consistently in tha PAC 12? Certain schools will always have huge advantages in recruiting and remain in the top tier of the conference. Not to say you won't have few moments where the averages have to play out but enjoy them when they come because they will few and far in-between. But on the flip side, the u is an official member of the second best conference in the land. Nothing to sneeze at!
The Pac 11 has never looked so bad...
Jello would be my guess.
Reminds me of an old Jeff Beck song, "I'm going down, down down."
I really don't understand the constant jabs from byu fans about Utah joining the PAC12. Of course this was and still is something for Utah fans to be excited about.
Don't kid yourself into thinking that your own school would have made the exact same move if they had been invited. It's also very clear that your cougs would find themselves in the same position as Utah has. The byu basketball team would obviously fair better than the Utes have over two years, but the y would be middle of the conference at best especially this year.
I think rational Utah fans knew that it would take time to build up programs in order to compete at this higher level of competition. It's easy to pile on when a team is down but to consider that even on their down years in football, they managed to beat your team every year since joining the conference.
As for the basketball team, I hope they can manage a few more wins this year. It would be a nice tribute to their old coach if they could somehow win this Saturday when they honor Majerus.
Go Utes!
Chris B's tortured life coping with Ute basketball is hilarious. It's worthy of its own cartoon series. LOL

Says the guy whose screen name takes a jab at BYU.
And BYU fans aren't taking jabs at the Utes for joining the PAC 12, they're taking jabs at fans who believed that Utah would be competing for Rosebowls with only nascent success nationally in fb and competing in Final Fours year in and year out with 4 losing seasons in 6 years in basketball.
You seem to be realistic about the bball team; Are you different from other ute fans or did you not cc'd on the talking points memo?
@Qwest Perfected - "I really don't understand the constant jabs from byu fans about Utah joining the PAC12."
I don't think anyone is jabbing U about joining the PAC12. I'm sure U are right, BYU would join the PAC12 or BIG12 if the invite came. (At least I'd hope so.)
The jabs are coming because U finished 2nd to last in football, last in baseball and U are in last place in men's and women's basketball. And yet some Ute fans still think the atheletic program is awesome just because U are in the PAC12.
As much as I'd like BYU to be in a major conference, I'd rather have them be able to compete than finish at the bottom.
I love seeing BYU FB in the Top 25 5 of the last 7 years. I love going to the NCAA in BB the last six seasons. I love seeing the men's volleyball team knock of the #1 team last month and the women's soccer team going to the great 8, and the rugby dudes at the top of the list. To me this is even better than being in a major conference, at the bottom.
@Qwest Perfected - "I really don't understand the constant jabs from byu fans about Utah joining the PAC12."
It has nothing to do with the Utes being IN the PAC12. It's all about poking fun at a puffed up fanbase that's so full of itself thinking their school's athletic programs were going to be competitive at this level week end and week out. It didn't happen like all of you Ute fans said it would.
It's a downward slide. What's so hard to understand that your rival is just enjoying rubbing your nose in 'it' after witnessing 3 seasons of PAC 12 praises only to be dashed to pieces by mediocrity and a 10 loss Colorado team that hadn't won on the road in 4 years. 2012... bowl less... no different.
What's not to enjoy? The classic tragedy has always been interesting read in literature.
A Ute story... no different.
@qwesty
The only "jabs" BYU fans have ever taken about utah being in the pac12 are at utah's obvious place in it and utah "fans" inability to grasp it. I certainly don't fault utah for going, but I have always laughed at utah "fans" that actually thought utah would go right into it being competitive at, well, any sort at all.
utah has always been a 2nd tier wac/mwc program overall. Yes they had individual teams that preformed well on occasion but with the exception of womens gymnastics not one single other sport utah participates in has ever been ocnisstently great for any extended period of time. Even mens basketball, that for about a decade was very good, wasn't consistently dominating during the wac/mwc years.
So utah 'fans" delusional crowing about what utah was going to do in the pac12 has always been in need of some mocking from thos of us that can grasp reality.
Now I will admit utah "fans" have recently been a bit more realistic about their athletic program, but it took 2 years of every sport beatdowns to peirce their thick skulls.
We find it funny.
