Confirming a permanent Director of the ATF should be the minimum action taken by Republican legislators in Congress. If they can't/won't do this, then it will be very evident who they serve--the gun manufacturers. Gun enthusiasts often say "we just need to enforce existing laws"--but then slowly and steadily chip away at gun laws and make enforcement more difficult.
There were those who spoke out about concerns with Eric Holders integrity and expressed positions on issues during his confirmation hearings, but he was approved. Big mistake, like Fast and Furious big.
That has taught us that we need to take the approval hearings much more seriously, especially for ATF, which tends to run in the style of Rambo.
Obviously the NRA prefers a vacant chair just like criminals would like there to be no judges in their city.
