You can compare the U.S. incarceration rate with that of any other developed country, not just Japan, and you will find that our rate is many times higher. Clearly we are doing something very wrong compared to the rest of the world. I don't claim to know what it is.
Even in the US I think most people will return lost property. There are unfortuntly some dishonest people as there are in Japan. I think the US does a better job of enforcing cirmes, and people should be intimidated by the justice system. If someoneis a danget they need to be locked up.
I served an LDS mission amongst Asians.
Japan [as well as the rest of our friends and allies with lower crime rates] are all "Socialist".
They believe what is good for Society, benefits the self.
All for one, and one for all.
We are all in this together.
It's the exact opposite of the "everyman for himself - dog eat dog - King of the hill - me, Myself, and I" of American selfishness.
Yes LDS Liberal what is good for society is good for all. I guess that mantra worked when black people were in slavery. Or how about when Roosevelt imprisoned all of the japanese, german, and italian people in prison camps. That surely was good for society. How about when america screwed the indians over and the trail of tears. That sure was good for society. The problem with your mantra is that the tyrants use it for evil and even the most tyrannical of them all SATAN.
Satan had a plan that follows that mantra to the key. Since you are LDS you didn't believe it then but you believe it now. Why the change of heart?
Japan is indeed a unique, and very safe culture. It's also incredibly homogenous, which is an advantage, or disadvantage, depending on how you look at it. However, or incarceration rate has more to do with stupid pot laws than anything else.

Lucifer wanted to FORCE everyone to choose the right.
That would be things like banning shopping on Sunday, R-rated movies, alcohol, and any other vice the right-wing does like ... including abortion.
BTW - Lucifer was cast out and became Satan for Rebellion -- and not his plan.
Another example the uber-far-right-wing is playing out.
FYI - Jesus was a Liberal.
Try looking the word up in a dictionary.
What should be pointed out is that Japanese culture has changed recently to be much less violent. The Chinese still remember the late 30's when Japanese soldiers invaded, raped and pillaged their civilians with unusual monstrosity
It's easy enough to scare and propagandize people into doing horrific things.
What the right and the NRA have been doing is extremely dangerous flirting with armed rebellion against our self governance.
