Hagel is a critic of the Bush Jr. era neocons. To Mr Krauthammer that put him "out of the mainstream". To the vast majority of Americans that puts him right in the center of the mainstream. Mr. Krauthammer thinks the mainstream is the in the same place it was in 2002, he is very wrong.

Mr. Krauthammer's fears that a $600 billion cut in defense spending, over 10 years, will (in Leon Paneta's words) "hollow out" our defense capability are unfounded. This amounts to $60 billion per year, out of more than $700 billion. Such cuts would reduce our military expenditures from being about equal to that of the entire rest of the world, to only being about 90% of the expenditures of the rest of the world. Military contractors will howl, and states in which bases are closed will howl, but these are expenditures that we don't need. There are far better places to spend this money - including reducing the deficit, paying down the debt, hiring more policemen and schoolteachers, and many more.

Yes Mr. Krauthammer, the pick reveals Obama's intentions get out and stay out of uncessary costly deadly military actions. Just common sense Mr. Kruathammer, just common sense.

Does anyone listen to chuck anymore? I mean... Seriously. Does anyone? His act of stirring the pot has gotten old. I don't know of anyone that listens or reads his garbage anymore. Why the dnews carries him is beyond me.

Krauthammer is worried that Hagel and the administration might no say "how high?" in so many words when Israel says jump. I agree with Pat Buchanan on one thing at least, "U S foreign policy should be set in Washington, not Tel Aviv."

Intentions...

Chuck Hagel served his country in Viet Nam as well as serving his country as an elected member of the United State Senate.

charles krauthammer born 3/19/1950 never served in the military for his country and has never been elected to public office.

charles krauthammer has spent years serving himself.

In other words, charles krauthammer is all hat and no cattle.

However, I do respect his right to voice his opinion as well as the DN giving him a weekly forum to voice that opinion.
