The legal proceedings may be protracted as in the cases of Elizabeth Smart’s abductor and Gabby Gifford’s assailant. Both were initially ruled incompetent to stand trial but when the cases finally got to trial, neither jury took long to reach a guilty verdict.

Due process may not always be swift but it works.
