It was a long lay-off. Does Notre Dame have in in-door field to practice on? They looked rusty.
Goes to show how ridiculous the BCS "rating system" is. ND was never a top 10 team, much less the # 1. Remember the BYU game. I wouldn't be surprised if the SEC coaches helped the ND team get into the Championship games rather than a much more deserving and superior Oregon! Another BCS disaster1
No doubt Oregon would have give Alabama a more competitive game than ND, but the final outcome would still have been the same. Seven straight BCS titles for the SEC!
Tough ending to a great year for Notre Dame and Manti Te'o. I understand where Thomas jefferson is coming from, but without a playoff, Notre Dame had to be given the title shot (only fair).
Alabama looked pretty dominant in that game. While Oregon may have given the Tide more of a game, something tells me that Alabama still would have beaten Oregon pretty convincingly as well, especially after the way Stanford found a way to beat Oregon. Alabama is like Stanford, tough and physical, but a lot bigger, stronger, and faster. Even this Alabama team, which is not as good as last year's Alabama team, is better than the Auburn team Oregon played in 2011. I am even an Oregon fan and I think with the way Alabama played tonight, Alabama would have worn down a much smaller, though fast and athletic Oregon team.
Hopefully someone finds a way to beat Alabama next year, and I actually hope it's Oregon.
ND beat everone on their schedule and deserved to be there. They beat Stanford, Oklahoma, and many others. It really goes to show how good Alabama and the SEC are. Bama looked like men among boys and frankly most SEC teams in their bowl games looked the same. Yes....I know LSU, Florida, and M-State lost but 6 other SEC teams won their bowl games....by far the most bowl game wins by a conference. The SEC dominates college football and the junk played in Utah is not even close to what you can see in the south.
Roll Tide!!!
BYUs biggest win in the last 3 seasons (a 3 point loss to ND) doesn't look as good as the cougar fans made it out to be....
BYU and ND fans were the only groups I talked to that didn't believe ND was overrated.
@worf
"ND seemed rusty"
If you could not see that ND was completely overmatched in every aspect of that game, you know nothing about football. Rust has nothing to do with being inferior in every facet of football as ND was compared to Alabama. I know cougar fans want to believe they competed with a top team, but the fact is ND was vastly overrated.
I said all season that ND was overrated. But without a playoff, and with Oregon inexplicably losing to Stanford, they had to be picked for the title game.
I recorded it on my DVR and watched it later, thankful that I have a 21-point rule where if one team gets ahead by 21, I fast forward until lit gets closer. Never did.
I honestly believe that Oregon could have won against Alabama, but only if they played their game, which they did not do 2 years ago against Auburn or this year against Stanford.
Thank goodness Chip Kelly is staying. Look for Oregon to win the NC next year, with most impact players returning.
Playoff! Playoff!
Too bad we still have one more season of this ridiculous BCS. Even the 4 team playoff format would have spared us that disaster last night. There is no way ND even gets to the final with the playoff in place. Exceptionally poor tackling by the Irish.
Feel bad for Manti Te'o and a long layoff of not playing is the big reason. But, Bama would still beat them even ND got two weeks to prepare. That is why playoffs is needed. Four teams playoff is a good start after 2014. Eight teams is more likely going to be the answer starting at mid December and finish after 1st week of January. sixteen teams playoff is not going to happen but I hope that I am wrong. After that 1st qtr was over it was pretty much over which I careless the rest of the way. Down the wire would of been fun to watch.
cant blame this on manti. offense was terrible. the entire defense was missing tackles, secondary exposed, defensive line got pushed around.
good luck in nfl.
When your opponent puts up 35 points before your team ever even sniffs the red zone, and you are the Heisman candidate anchor for your defense, then it is not an overstatement to say this embarassing loss is on Te'o.
This was one of the worst defeats by a nationally respected team since the Utes wiped out Alabama.

Of course that would be like saying our biggest win in the last 100 seasons (a Sugar Bowl win against a disinterested Alabama) doesn't look as good as we Ute fans made it out to be either. I wish we could have played Alabama again this year to prove their down year in the Sugar Bowl wasn't a fluke.
Re: oldschool
Actually Florida beat Alabama by about the same margin so, maybe it was one of, but don't make it bigger than it was.
I also feel pretty bad for Manti Te'o. He deserved to finish his career on a way better note that this. He was in position to make all of his tackles but he missed most of them. Not sure why he felt like he could arm tackle their running backs. Oh well.
Notre Dame was a really good team. They beat Stanford by 7 (who beat Oregon). They convincingly beat Oklahoma and USC. They took care of business and got themselves to the national championship. I still think they are one of the better teams in the country. BYU played a respectable game against them with a member of our kickoff team as the QB.
However, clearly Alabama is the class of the country. They are on an unbelievable level of excellence right now that they were not at a few years ago. For Utah fans that wish they could play Alabama again now, sorry, but you would get EMBARRASSED. Even though Star Lotulelei against Bama's O-line would be fun to watch.
Finally Bama can shut up the biased media. ND should have never been in the title game. It was also clear that the Heisman voters got it right when the gave the award to Johnny football. Te'o had a half a tackle in the first half and was consistantly out of position, took a side or was blocked. He's a very average linebacker at best. It just goes to show you how much influence the media has. I wouldn't be surprised to watch Te'o drop in the draft to a much lower round.
One can rightfully argue that BYU was the hottest team at the end of the season. If only Lark had started earlier!!
