Yes BUT, far too many "charities" hide behind their religious affiliation. If we are going to keep this deduction then the taxpayers have a right to see just how charitable the organizations are. I once visited a mansion of a lodge being built in the Colorado mountains for some televangelist. Undoubtedly this was built with so-called charitable donations. If you donate to a charity and take a tax deduction then WE get to see how the money is being spent.
