What should be on the table is mental health issues number 1.... sensible gun control second. But grand standing and largely symbolic gun control talks are a lot cheaper and easier than talking about and dealing with the real mental illness issues we have going on now.
Never will I be accused on being a NRA supporter, but talking gun control first has the conversation backwards.
