From my point of view, and I have no insight into Dr. Hill's decisions, I think it's great that we're not playing BYU.

We've dominated in recent years AND in the overall series. nothing to prove

While we still have to put up with their snivelly, small-minded fans and their "we'd have beat you had we played", we won't have to listen to their excuses after they lose.

Nah, it's fun shutting up their obnoxious fans with victory on the field, but after a while, it just gets tiresome to hear their snivelling. It's good to give it a rest.

Now if Utah can just steal a defensive backs coach from USU since Utah obviously has a need there and USU's coaches just won position coach of the year honors, they should be able to shore up their pathetic defensive backfield performance of last season and compete a little better on the field against the quality teams in the conference.

Seeing as how Utah has fallen so far and is becoming the state's laughing stock, as so many Y posters said, why couldn't BYU beat them?

Beating USU is much more difficult than beating BYU as has been proven.

Plus, USU doesn't quit when they get behind.

Whatsnu:

"NOBODY, and I mean, NOBODY, not living under that crimson-colored bubble on the hill, is buying that Utah dropped BYU to schedule Fresno State..."

From what I've been reading, it looks more like is the Indy-WACey fanbase that is claiming Utah dropped them for FSU. FSU was just barely added to our schedule. You guys were dismissed way back when we scheduled Michigan. It's the Wolverines who replaced you. FSU more likely replaced USU.

"Beating USU is much more difficult than beating BYU as has been proven."

Which of course explains why the Utes are dropping USU completely and running away from BYU for a couple of years, so the Utes can play a WAC team that has only had one 10-win season in the last 20 years.

"USU doesn't quit when they get behind."

Remind us again how many times the MUSS rushed the field this year before the Utes could finally claim victory over a team that supposedly quits when they get behind.

Regardless of how U spin it, EVERYBODY knows that the Utes scheduled down in order to give themselves a chance to be bowl eligible in 2014 and 2015. It would be hysterical if every Utah fan's worst nightmare occurs and the Bulldogs actually have a decent team in 2014 and 2015, upsetting the Utes and dooming the Utes to another couple of bowl-less seasons.

Don't kid yourself.

Hill himself announced at the time he scheduled Michigan and dropped BYU, that he didn't think the Utes were good enough to play both BYU and Michigan OOC in the same year. Fresno State is the "B" team in Hill's scheduling plan - a solid but beatable team - unlike Michigan and BYU, whom Hill considers "A" teams - strong teams that could very likely beat the Utes. The "C" team will be another Montana, Northern Colorado, or Weber State, a warm up, automatic win for the Utes.

With the very real possibility of the Utes suffering at least four or five conference losses every year, Hill is simply giving the Utes a reasonable chance to get the two OOC wins necessary to keep the Utes bowl eligible.

While the big boys of the PAC 10.2 are scheduling up to qualify for the playoffs, the little boys of the conference are scheduling down to qualify for a bowl.

A hard as that is for the "mighty" Utes to accept, that's reality.

BYU moving away from WAC teams. Utah moving towards them. At least if U beat USU and Fresno St, U can claim the WAC Championship. Although, beating USU might be a tall order.

____________

BYU can claim the WAC title! Well almost.
BYU should move away from playing San Jose St. BYU is 6-10 all time against the Spartans.
And why is BYU afraid to schedule Colorado? BYU is 3-8-1 all time against them.
If BYU moves away from playing WAC type teams, how do they expect to become bowl eligible? The past few years have proven they can't beat better teams.

There's no sport in playing BYU anymore. If BYU wins, they're (rightly so) better. If Utah wins, the same old tired posters (Daffy aka Duckhunter & Kenny aka Sammy G) claim BYU gave the game away. Blah, blah, blah . . .

The rivalry, because of the fans (me included), is a bore. It's more fun to root for every PAC-12 team's out of conference and bowl games. Something neither fan base of BYU/Utah is capable of.

"...why is BYU afraid to schedule Colorado?"

Where on earth did you conjure up this bogus idea that BYU is "afraid" to schedule Colorado???

BYU has won 3 of its last 4 games versus the Buffs including a bowl game in 1988 (20-17) and BYU's last visit to Boulder (41-20). The last time BYU lost to Colorado was 1947 (7-9) in Boulder, loooong before most of the PARENTS of most of the posters on this blog were even born.

Fans of a program that was so inept that it was only able to win TWO conference titles in 38 years would be wise to stop disparaging the conference.

It simply makes you look foolish.

btw, why are the Utes "afraid" to schedule the YMCA? The Utes are 1-7 versus the Village People.

"Utah football is slowly sinking into the abyss while Utah fans are beating their chests in delusional arrogance.

Sad!"

And yet, we still beat you. Choice, isn't it?

The delusion on the hill continues to go viral.

Now we have 'bored' Ute fans that are leaving the fold... would rather watch other teams outside the PAC12 and other bowl games.

My question is this... what other option did U think you had this post season?

I'm not quite sure why some of my fellow fans make a big deal about this. As Uteanymous accurately pointed out, the reason Utah dropped BYU was they were concerned about playing them the same year they played Michigan. It doesn't take an intelligent person to understand that means they are concerned about the potential for losing to both. If not for the BYU coaching staff's dreadful handling of the QB situation this year, BYU would have easily won. Fresno State is a decent school, certainly, but you would have to like Utah's chances against them more than against a rival. Given the stated rationale for dropping BYU, I think this move makes plenty of sense.

Chris Hill just lost all credibility in my book.

All Ute fans i know want the rivalry game to continue. This is garbage.

All the Ute fans I have talked to.....and they have been really annoying these past few years....hate this. I give them credit for that. No matter how Utah wants to spin this....it makes them look weak. I usually cheer for both teams....BYU and Utah...but this year I wanted Utah to lose every game they played. It was nice to see them have a losing season because of their arrogance.

Justmythoughts, regarding the losing season, too bad BYU fans have to live vicariously through teams that can actually beat Utah. The only reason BYU was bowl eligible was because they played a WAC lite schedule (Hawaii, Idaho, New Mexico State etc.).

@pebbles

"The only reason BYU was bowl eligible was because they played a WAC lite schedule"

I'll try to keep that in mind while I'm in San Diego watching my team play in a bowl game. Meanwhile you'll be at home watching my team play in a bowl game, desperately hoping they lose, and only wondering what it might be like to be watching your team play in a bowl game in San Diego.

LOL!

Pebbles huh, at least I served. Yes, I am so jealous of a third rate bowl game that nobody outside of Utah or San Diego cares about. No surprising Y fans would be as third rate bowls is all they have ever known. Cheers.

"Yes, I am so jealous of a third rate bowl game that nobody outside of Utah or San Diego cares about."

Actually, you're beside yourself with jealousy that the only bowl the Utes are good enough to play in anymore is the couch potato bowl.

I'll say it again - BYU fans, get over yourselves.

All this talk of "Utah is afraid to play BYU....Utah is killing the rivalry.....everyone is laughing at Utah," just makes you sound petty and shrill. And those characteristics aren't congruent with what BYU as an institution stands for.

Why are you so concerned with what Utah does and doesn't do? Does being offended, and publicly (or semi-publicly) venting your frustrations help you sleep at night?

It never ceases to amaze me that despite being beaten 8 of the last 11 times, BYU fans try to peddle that the Utes are "afraid" to play the Cougars.

I am looking forward to seeing how NOT playing BYU in football goes. The rivalry is certainly heated, but I it seems to bring out the worst in both fan bases.

As far as Fresno goes:

The Bulldogs have a solid football program.

The Valley is a talent-rich recruiting site.

Maybe Utah didn't ask for a 2 for 1 deal.

It is dangerous to think of the FSU games as automatic wins.

Even if Fresno isn't particularly strong those two seasons, Utah's strength of schedule will rank very high.
