higv,
I believe Jabari will be 18 still so he falls under the group which President Monson said has the option to go if they're ready. So he hasn't tried to make himself and exception.
I think it'd be great for him to serve, but this is a tough decision. I think we're often a little tough on LDS star athletes who decide not to serve missions. It would be a terribly hard decision to make and if we were in their shoes we may have made the same decision as them.
Jake Heaps didn't go on a mission, look at all of the positive press he brought to the Church and BYU.
Obviously, the decision is between him and the Lord. If he goes, great, if he doesn't he can still be a positive example for kids and the LDS Church. Two names prove the point: Jimmer and Young.
