I don't see why Obama needs to say anything. He did his best to state in the election that the election wasn't about the economy. So clearly, we have no problems.

Hey DN!

Why can I find nowhere on your web page the article in this morning's print edition with the headline "Fiscal deal still elusive"?

I tried using your search with the key word "fiscal" and still could not find it, and the search went back in time.

Could it be that you were aware the AP story has lies and distortions in it and while you felt safe printing it, you did not want it in cyberspace where the lies and distortions could be enumerated and commented on?

The article is not entirely accurate. It should have clearly made the point that under the President's plan even those earning more than 250K still get a tax break on the first 250K of wage based income. And, as we all know under current tax law, any income that has been earned under capital gains tax law will still be taxed only at 15%. But, I hope that inequity changes--and don't give me the bogus story that this investment income has already been taxed before.

Mike in Cedar City,

Why do you Obama fans think that taxing the very people who create jobs is going to solve the problem?

Do you want our whole country to be poor and dependent on the government?

America is going downhill so fast it's sad.

You "misery loves company" type of people have chosen to keep Obama in office in hopes that he will destroy the "rich" and bring "equality" and misery to everyone.

So, If you can't have it then NO ONE can. Is that right?

Go evaluate your logic and be honest with yourself.

And for heavens sake please stop hating people who have more money than you.

Government can't control it's spending, so we the employer will pay.

May our liberal friends get what they voted for.

The president has to continue to try to convince and motivate people to get on board with some sort of solution we all agree on because so many people are so miserable out there they just want to sit and pout. Let's fix this, folks.

It is a national disgrace that this issue was ignored for a year so politicians could campaign.
That's the core of the problem here; our "leaders" aren't leading.
Over the years everything from legislation to Fed policy has been geared toward chearleading rather than fixing the real problems.
And Wall Street plays the game as well, running up gains based on perception and speculation.
The bubble continues to grow.

"Let's fix this, folks."

Ok; lets start by having Harry Reid and the Senate, which has been Democrat controlled since 2006, actually complete a budget - then Obama should abandon his race/gender/class warfare and actually propose a solution. But it is sooo much easier to blame Republicans, who have controlled one half of one third of the Obama administration for one half his term, than it is for the far left to actually accomplish anything.

The Republican Party can't control it's spending, so we taxpayers will pay. Then we'll be gullible enough to believe them when they claim it was the Democrats' fault.

May our conservative friends get what they voted for.

What is Obama's plan with preventing the fiscal cliff. What's the budget plan for next year. How much is Obama Care going to cost us?

He did pledged (four years ago) that he won't raise taxes, and provide major spending reductions. Where is his voice and leadership with fiscal cliff?

What's he doing to create jobs, hiring new teachers, building new roads/bridges, and simplifying the tax code? Why did he give eighty percent of our stimulus money to other countries. New factories in China, billions to the Muslim Brotherhood, Pakistan, Finland, Brazil, Mexico, etc.

Hope he doesn't sit back and blame Republicans.

Man up and lead this country to prosperity!! Do something positive for this country. Who'se in charge?

Mr. President, are you going to continue to campaign, or are you going to lead? Going the Philadelphia to make a speech is NOT leading.

You cannot do both.

It won't be long now before we get the Republicans lame response and stonewalling and we'll start to see history repeat itself. We saw this movie for the past four years. The one glimmer of hope we see is the Republicans finally turning on that Plutocrat, Grover Nordquist. Any politican who signed his silly pledge should be removed from office for conspiring to drive our great country to ruins. But at least the fiscal cliff discussion will give Fox Noise something other to talk about other than the Bengahzi cover up they've created.

Taxing the rich is nothing more than Obama punishing the wealthy. According to the CBO, when Obama wanted to punish the rich with more taxes, it would have only added $5 billion in tax revenues. With $1.3 Trillion in deficits, the extra money will make no difference.

Tell us Mr. President, why do we have to be taxed more? Why can't you and your cronies spend less?

Barak Obama’s attitude about abortion tells me that he is a man of compromised character and that he cannot be trusted. Consequently, I would caution any congressman or senator from cooperating with him on any other issue. Pass good laws and if he doesn’t like them, so be it. But, be wary of his hidden (and not so hidden) agenda.

Check out the link on the Drudge Report called 'Govt Agrees to Lower Taxes -- in China.' How are we supposed to compete with China and create jobs here when businesses are leaving this country in droves for fear that their taxes are going to go up? All the while China's taxes are going down! And Obama is adamant that extending the Bush tax cuts is off the table? Because letting them expire will create enough revenue to fund our inefficient government for a week or two? Our President obviously doesn't no how to negotiate. Will someone please tell me why we voted for this amateur?

Obama has no plan, only rhetoric, and refuses to even herd his Democrat flunkies into a single position. He wants to demagogue this issue some more, and blame Republicans for whatever painful solution is adopted (assuming one is actually adopted), or to demonize them for not adopting a scheme that will make things even worse.

We are doomed to economic self destruction by the failure of Democrats to control the addiction to spending. The Republican failure to stand completely in the way and to allow some unsustainable programs (e.g.- prescription drug benefit) is also part of the problem, not part of the solution.

Take all the money from the millionaires/billionaires, and it wouldn't run the government for a week.

We need more leadership from our commander. You're barking up the wrong tree.

Let's try a little different approach. We must do something to stop the fiscal cliff problem by the end of the year. So let's try three things, 1 - use Obama's proposed tax rate increases, but start at $500,000 for single and $750,000 for couples; 2 - repeal Obamacare and Dodd-Frank, both have clauses in them that cause more problems than they fix (Obamacare for instance has lots of taxes imposed on small businesses); 3 - close some tax loop holes (energy tax credits seems to be a popular topic).

Or we could try Warren Buffet's concept of a 30% tax of income over a $1 Million regardless of high the income was acquired (no more capital gains income of $1 Million).

But let's do something to fix this problem.

[Funny you should mention that - isn't that Precisely why Mitt Romney lost -- Flip-Flopping and compromising on not just one, but each and every single issue? - including his stance on Pro-choice? Agreed, America couldn't trust him.]
