I hesitate to go down this road because of the inevitable political diatribes for or against Obama and Romney, but the truth is that this is where a president can matter in the economy.

Reagan's economic policies can be criticized, but the optimism he inspired was important. We need that again. It's not just about what we can do, but what we think we can do.

A small tip of the hat by Samuelson to the fact that recessions accompanied by financial crises take longer to recover when he acknowledged such..but then he missed the point when he said..but it's all ready been three years. The fact is all such recessions have taken four to six years to regain their footing, so historically we're not doing so bad.

Samuelson also does a disservice when he writes an article about psycology then fails to connect the damage done by the extreme ranting of the right about "reckless spending", "crusing"debt, deficits that will "bury" our children and grandchildren, the immediate facts are that inflation is 0% and interest rates are near 0%. Of course the deficit is a problem but it's a longer term problem than today. The point here is this is a demand driven recession, and anything that influences consumers to save rather than spend dampens the recovery.

Could it be that the current recession/depression has nothing to do with economics? That the economy is being used as a weapon in the war on our national government?

Could it be that the contenders for supremacy have eyes for their own government notions after the fall of the American government. Contenders like international corporations, religions, races and others who feel they have the right to rule the world.

There are always those that want destruction and chaos, it's a pre-mortal character flaw that many share.

After watching the conservative dream, "Red Dawn", I think I fully comprehend that many of these gun hoarding, doom prophesying conservatives really just have that desire in their hearts to fight and have war and chaos. Peacefull life just isn't want they truly desire. So they look for wars, allow bankers to wreck the economy and promise chaos and civil unrest if they don't get to control the country and create wars somewhere.
