"Utah has been to a bowl game 11 of the last 12 years, and 14 of the last 18. They have won 10 of their last 11 bowls..."

How many times did one of those amazing Utah bowl-winning teams manage to finish in the Top 25?

How many times did the Utes play in a bowl as "insigificant" as the Las Vegas (remember when Utah fans were claiming that the Poinsettia Bowl was just as "presitigious" as the Las Vegas Bowl?), Poinsettia, Armed Forces, Kraft Fight Hunger or Liberty Bowl?

How many times did the Utes play a ranked team in one of those bowls?

How many of those bowl-winning Utah teams were also conference champions?

The truth is, alot of mediocre Utah teams played in alot of meaningless bowls against alot of mediocre opponents, and this season, the "mighty" Utes weren't even good enough to reach that low standard.

At least U have basketball to look forward to...

or not.

Where to start? First off, don't assume my age, because you haven't a clue. Utah has done well over the last 10 - 12 years. Of course BYU fans get in their time machine because Utah has rolled them as of late. I've noticed it's basically your only defense. Keep living in the past, and trolling the Utah threads. I will continue to deal with recent history and pull for my team. You can continue to discuss ancient history. Oh, don't recall ever saying Utah had a great program prior to the 90's? No, just Phoenix putting words in my mouth. When's the last time BYU made "a ripple" on the National scale? It's been a while; don't kid your self! It's not my fault if no conference wants your team and you can't run the table to a BCS game. Live with it!

Who has won on the field between BYU the last three years, and 8 of the last 11?

There's your cue to jump in the BYU time machine. Tell us all about the great Fiesta Bowl loss, from 38 years ago.

Even in a down year, with a miserable offense, BYU was still only one decent throw from Riley to Hoffman away from beating the #1-ranked team in the country on their home field.

It's not BYU's fault if Utah's best is only 2nd best, #2/#4.

Call us when U reach the pinnacle; ancient or not, we've been where you can only dreaming of being someday.

LOL! post after post from jealous cougie fan's. Cougies worry about actually winning a game against Utah and San Jose St. then come back and talk....LOL!

Ducky/Pheniox you are correct Utah has done twice as much over the last decade then the cougies have in their entire history. Undefeated seasons Utah 2 (last 8 Years)...Cougies 1 (ever) Overall undefeated seasons Utah 9....Cougies 1....LOL!

Yes, it seem like the same little group just can't leave Utah thread(s) alone. Your Screen name really says it all when discussing Utah Football. Now Thesportsauthority is bragging about a loss. Notice how he didn't mention the Utah - BYU game "during this down year"? They always seem to leave that tid bit out. Maybe Thesportauthority can call us when BYU makes a BCS bowl game. He might as well have his phone service disconnected.

How embarrassing it must be for U to finish a season "undefeated" and not get a single vote in the national polls.

Even more embarrassing, to have one of your "undefeated" leather-helmet era teams TIED by a mediocre BYU team.

The time machine slant again? I guess if that's all you got, that's all you got. Pounding on your chest about the season you didn't beat a single ranked team; and beat poor 6-6 Michigan in your huge Holiday Bowl game. Talk about embarassing.

I wonder how many of these folks are posting under several differn't screen names? The debate is always the same and always refers to the good old days.

History starts when BYU says it starts?

If we are comparing; history starts when the programs start. If that is the case, BYU has a long way to go to catch up. Utah has their worst season since McBride was fired yet they still were good enough to beat BYU. What does that say about BYU? Awards are great but do they resonate to wins on the field? Nope.

@spokane ute

Everything you cling to is in the past as well. utah is not a bcs caliber team any longer, it's over. You utah "fans" cling to the ute's basketball finals appearance as if it just happened as well, please note it was 14 years ago, two decades and a century previous to this one.

BYU won the football National Championship my sr year of HS, I was 18. I am now in my 40's. It does not seem long ago to me at all. We all judge "ancient history" by our own frame of reference. utah's fiesta bowl appearance was 8 years ago, their sugar bowl appearance 4 years ago. Time flies.

But if you are so fixated on living in the present and truly believe that is all that matters, well today, right now, utah's football and basketball, frankly their entire athletic program, is abysmal. Just plain awful. That is the present. That is not "ancient history", that is not decades or centuries past, that is now, right now, currently, as we speak. They are truly bad. There you have it. That is the present. I know it is rough but it is today.

Army has a very strong history in football. Anybody mind telling me how this is relevant today? Nobody has ever tried to claim Utah has a strong history in football. The program has been very strong the past decade and hopefully will continue to grow with the new advantages afforded by the PAC-12. This year wasn't great but that happens to every team once in a while.

Utah's program has had two very strong seasons the last decade, and little else in their entire history.

Your example of Army once being a strong football program MIGHT be relevant if there was any similarity to BYU.

The HUGE difference that Utah fans conveniently overlook when offering such comparisons, is Army, unlike other teams that had great accomplishments back in the 40's, hasn't done much since.

BYU, on the other hand, has been a perennial Top 25 team since 1977, 18 Top 25 finishes in the last 35 years, including FOUR Top 10 finishes and TEN Top 15 finishes.

In fact, Bronco has almost as many AP Top 25 finishes (four) as the Utes have in their entire history (five).

Ancient history or modern history, on a national scale, BYU is still more accomplished, overall, than the Utes.

Overall undefeated seasons Utah 9

Talk about losers.

How does it feel to have 7 undefeated teams that didn't get a single vote in the polls, and 2 other undefeated teams that only got ONE 1st place vote between them (from their own coach)?

How does it feel to have an undefeated team TIED 6-6, by a mediocre 4-3-2 BYU team or another undefeated team SHUT OUT 0-0, by an even more mediocre 3-3-1 BYU team?

BYU, by comparison, is one for one on undefeated teams winning a National Championship!

So BYU has finished in the top 25, 50% of the time since 1977. Why do you only credit Utah with two great seasons when they finished ranked 50% of the time in the past decade? That is a double standard. Not only that but BYU won 12 bowl games in that 35 years while Utah won eight in the decade, including two BCS bowls. If you credit BYU with three great decades it would be dishonest to not credit Utah with a great decade these past ten years.

Also, my point was not to compare BYU and Army. It was simply to illustrate that a great history is nice, but it means very little when comparing the current state of the programs.

BTW, BYU's last top 10 finish was in '96. Utah has finished in the top 5 twice since then....

"When's the last time BYU made "a ripple" on the National scale?"

Though BYU has had nothing recently on the radar as far as national rankings, Heisman watch and so forth I do seem to remember BYU almost pulling off an upset over ND just a few weeks ago.

It was an event that certainly garnered more national media attention than your precious Utes vying for a proud piece of 10th place pie in the PAC 12 this weekend!

You poor Utes sure know how to milk that victim part in the PAC12 drama department.

"The Utes have over a hundred-year history of clunkers (not a single AP Top 25 finish until 1994), with only an occasional break through since."

Wow!---Someone did "mark it down".

Leading most of the game, BYU loss by three to the number one team in the country.

Doesn't look like a time machine to me.

Congrats BYU fans. You guys almost beat a good team. I've never seen a fan base so proud of a loss before.

We almost beat the irish....LOL!

Purdue was just as close to beating them and Pitt was even closer. So I'll put the cougies on the same level as Purdue and worse than Pitt since this is how you judge your team. We lost to San Jose St. but hey the irish only beat us by 3 were Awesome...LOL!

Jazz fans good news it's ok we didn't win the title we almost beat Michael Jordan that makes us good......LOL!

"So BYU has finished in the top 25, 50% of the time since 1977. Why do you only credit Utah with two great seasons when they finished ranked 50% of the time in the past decade?"

BYU's 50% is over a 35-year period.
Utah's 50% is over a 10-year period.

That's a HUGE difference, especially when you consider that Utah only has ONE other AP Top 25 finish in their entire history.

A Top 25 finish isn't necessarily a "great" season, but it is a good season. And stringing 18 Top 25 finishes together over three and a half decades proves that BYU has had a good football program for a very long time.

More importantly, BYU has shown the ability to string multiple Top 25 finishes together in three and four year stretches. Utah has never managed to string together more than two Top 25 finishes in both polls in their entire history - a couple of brilliant flashes in 2003/2004 and 2008/2009 and little else.
