Syracuse, I have to say you have earned my respect twice. Your D is for real. You will have the test of the year next week when you face Jordan. Their offensive line is incredible. I'm excited to come watch and wish you the best of luck. There is a lot of people on here that are eating crow tonight. Nice job!!

Hey Canuck 11, Bingham lost that game to Lone Peak because LP outplayed them the second half. I've heard two posts from you now dishing LP. Until AF can beat anyone besides Lehi, please stop dishing them.

That was such a good game. And hopefully Syracuse can get some respect for doing it. Syracuse has knocked out some of the states best football teams and did it with injuries. Lets see if we can beat jordan.

And please people if you not a fan, still give some respect. You know they are good. Stop doubting us.

It will definitly be a good game next week. Go TITANS!!!!!!

Syracuse looked good. Great job. Bingham needs to stop thinking the north teams are weak. Jordan looks tough against lone peak currently.

I think that in the analysis of Syracuse and Bingham, u forgot to include HEART! Syracuse plays with more heart! Great job on the win!!!!!!

I need to say, "Way to go Syracuse!" Great win over Bingham. You guys definately earned my respect today in the way that you out played the Bingham Miners with a backup quarterback. I am an Alta fan, and I can honestly say today, that syracuse is legit. Good luck next week!

GAME OVER!! Go home Bingham! Two years in a row that you couldn't handle the top team from Region 1. Congratulations Titans on doing it without your starting QB. I know he's proud!

    @football frenzy,
defense causes turnovers. You call it Alta giving the game away, I call it defense, heart and intensity. Syracuse won the game, Alta did not give it away. Alta had chances in the end, and Syracuse stopped them. Allowing 24 points to one of the best offenses in the state is not bad, and Alta has a better offense than Bingham. Look for Bingham to score a similar amount, 21 or so. It will be close. Both will score near 20. Syracuse will get turnovers from Bingham just like they did against Alta.

It will be very impressive if Syracuse can keep in this game as they are playing without three players that start on offense and defense in addition to having their QB out. Basically they are playing today's game without 8 starters.

This game won't be close. Unless Bingham pulls an Alta and gives Syracuse points, Bingham will pull away with this one. Yes, I said it again. Alta gave last week's game away to Syracuse. Scored 24 pts on a defense that was allowing 7. First quarter total giveaways to Syracuse is why the Hawks aren't in the semi's today at Rice Eccles. Go Bingham! Represent th south end of the Salt Lake valley well today. Sorry Syracuse. You won't be in this one today. Had a better chance with a healthy Anderson, but even the, you don't win this one.

    Bingham 34 Syracuse 17

As much as I truly love facts and the effort that Razorback put out in the open, you simply can't put on paper things like "effort", "heart", or just upsets in general. Crazy things happen all the time in sports and that's why sports are so awesome at this level. That being said, Anderson was the "X-Factor" for Syracuse and their offense. I see both defenses playing REALLY strong and tough but without Anderson, I don't see Syracuse's offense truly connecting and playing explosive.
My prediction: A closer game than most people expect. Syracuse 24-Bingham 31.

The reporters and fans are missing the biggest issue in this game for Syracuse. Unlike Alta and Bingham, Syracuse plays seven guys both ways. Two of their d-tackles and a d-end also start on the O-line and then their key receivers and best running back are also starting DB's and line backers. Although Syracuse has a tough defense, it would be fun to see how much better they would be if their guys weren't getting tired playing offense as well. Bigger programs like Alta and Bingham have a huge advantage since they have very few players seeing both sides of the ball. It is for this reason that Syracuse is so impressive to me. Their kids are sacrificing individual accomplishments and stats to play both ways where they are needed. The Syracuse fans need to realize this and make a lot of noise when their defense is on the field to give them that extra energy to play both ways.

    @plyxply

Bingham has played 3 good teams this year,
Alta 2nd game of the year when they missed about 5 players
Lone Peak in which some dumb play calls were going on.
    Valor Christian they won.

I dont get how you can say there offense isnt that good.
Dont compare them to Binghams of 2009, 2010, they had Cantwell ha and Langi.

This team has alot of grit, and I think this D is very good.
5 kids going D 1 on that defense alone.

because they dont have a RB with 1500 yards and 18 TDs doesnt mean this Offense isnt solid.

    But yes, Defense wins championships.
Hoping for a great game tomorrow morning!

Should be some great weather for a wonderful day of football!
Much better then Friday when it will be 40 degrees! ha

Hard to make a prediction because you never know what Cuse will do now with out there Senior captin starting QB out. and oh he is the KICKER.

    but that being said...

    Bingham 31
Syracuse 17 (maybe 24, I see one Defensive TD from Syracuse at least)

    Nice work Razorback. :-)

I think it will be a good game, however, Brock was the hub for the Syracuse offensive wheel. He made a lot of plays with his feet and avoided many sacks. The backup and Sophomore QB are good, but do not play the game like Brock. To tell you the truth I am a bit nervous for Cuse. Hope they will play well and win, but it appears Bingham is rolling. Would have been nice to see both teams at their peak.

Should be a good game. Keep in mind the starting QB for Bingham is very questionable to even play this week. Strained a muscle in his calf pretty severely. The advantage Bingham has with this is, they pretty much ran a 2 QB system for all but the last 3 games. So their backup is pretty comfortable out there.

  • plyxply SLC, UT
    Nov. 7, 2012 9:46 a.m.

Bingham won't score 38 on Syracuse, the Miners offense is not very good this year. In games vs good teams they struggled. With that said I think Bingham will still win the game, likely something like 17-14. Not taking anything away from Syracuse, but their offense wasn't that great, their defense scored one and then they recovered two fumbles deep in Alta territory and got 10 points out of it.
Now if Syracuse can get lucky with turnovers again then they have a good chance of beating Bingham.
With all of that said, this game is for 2nd place, neither team will give Jordan a game.

great analysis razorback. I agree with your prediction. Bingham will wear them down with their size and by the 4th quarter it will be decided. Bingham 38, Syracuse 14.

Bingham seems to be playing good football right now. I saw them lose to Lone Peak and I do not know how they lost that game.
I expect Syracuse to battle them tough, but I think in the end Bingham pulls this out 21-17.

Two good teams and it should be a fun game to watch.

hope all five or six posts went through and that at least some of it was interesting to some folks.

    few last comments

Coaching: Coach Peck has led Bingham to six RES appearances in seven years with four title games and three titles. Coach Jones has led Syracuse to RES three times in the program's six years - also a great feat. Bingham has a tradition, but Syracuse was here last year.

As I rated the defenses even and the offenses even it comes down to X factor - Anderson's injury. On the face of it, this is advantage to Bingham. But serious sports fans have seen plenty of times when it doesn't turn out that way. How does the back up perform? How does the entire team respond? How does the opponent prepare and respond? These can't be logically forecasted because it's a new variable and it's up to the players. We have to wait and see it play out.

I'll vote with my homer glasses and heart. Bingham 24, Syracuse 14
I'm not disrepecting Syracuse, it's just my prediction (and hope). Two really good teams and it will be a battle.

    Offenses:
    PPG: B 35.3, S 33.1
Opponents average points allowed per game: B 11.3, S 10.9
    Difference: B 23.9, S 22.2

Both teams score about 3 TD's more per game than opponents typically allow. Hard to tell what this means because blowout games change performance in second half but let's just take it at face value.

    YPG Total: B 357, S 337,
    YPG Rush: B 209 59%, S 167 50%
    YPG Pass: B 148 41%, S 170 50%

    TD's Total: B 49, S 45
    TD's Rush: B 34 69%, S 20 44%
    TD's Pass: B 15 31%, S 25 56%

    Yards per play total: B 6.2, S 6.5
    Yards per play rush: B 5.4, S 5.1
    Yards per play pass: B 8.0, S 8.9

    Offensive plays per game total: B 57, S 52
    Off plays per game rush: B 39, S 33
    Off plays per game pass: B 18, S 19

    Interceptions thrown: B 9, S 4

Advantage: none. Statistically these teams are quite even, except turnovers. Don't have statistics on fumles and penalties which could create a gap.

Took stats on DNEWS at face value.

    Defenses:
We know Syracuse had the lowest ppg allowed in 5A regular season at 7.8. It is typical for the R1 champ to annually hold that position at conclusion of the regular season and fans stake the claim of top defense in the state (until they get exposed in the title game). PPG allowed is a good stat but due to inconsistency in scheduling, it's good to look at how well the defense holds it's opponents below what they average against everyone else.

    Stats below are
    1. Opponents average points scored against other teams
    2. Opponents average score against them
    3. Difference

    Bingham - 25.0, 10.4 allowed, 14.6 below average
    Syracuse - 23.1, 8.5 allowed, 14.6 below average

They both hold opponents to two TD's below their average.
YTD each team has four shutouts.
They have played three common opponents; Syracuse allowed 32 points, Bingham allowed 31 points to those teams.

Advantage: none. These are the two best defenses in 5A and they are very similar in accomplishment.

Syracuse certainly showed well against Alta and it it was an impressive win. The defense was very good but Alta scored 24 points. I had predicted a 24-17 Alta win so the defense was about what I thought. What I didn't know (hadn't researched) is how good the offense was. Have done some research now to compare Syracuse and Bingham offenses and defenses.

Hopefully these posts go through in sequence or won't make sense.

All regions are .500 in region play so it helps to look at non-region performance. Below are the non-region regular season records by region - vs 5A other regions,4A,3A,Total

    R1 - 5A(6-6) R2 4-1, R3 1-4, R4 1-1, 4A 5-9, 3A 1-0, Tot 12-15

    R2 - 5A(3-10) R1 1-4, R3 2-2, R4 0-4, 4A 2-9, 3A 2-2, Tot 7-21

    R3 - 5A(10-7) R1 4-1, R2 2-2, R4 4-4, 4A 4-3, 3A 0-0, Tot 14-10

    R4 - 5A(9-5) R1 1-1, R2 4-0, R3 4-4, 4A 5-6, 3A 2-1, Tot 16-12

Probably won't look so neat when posted, but hopefully legible. R2 is pretty sad as a whole, possibly worst region in 5A, 4A or 3A. R1 goes sub .500 despite playing down for a majority of non-region contests and 5 of 12 5A games against the lowly R2.

Again, not criticizing and not judging teams or schedules. I'm only saying it's hard for an R1 outsider to develop any conviction on the quality of R1 leaders.

  • razorback South Jordan, UT
    Nov. 7, 2012 5:04 a.m.

I saw lots of comments last week about R1 not getting any respect from SL county fan bases. I realize there were a few who get on and talk down to R1 and I wished they wouldn't but my feeling is that the general sense year in and year out is that R1 teams come into the playoffs as unknowns to SL because of their schedules. The R1 non-region schedules usually have more 4A and 3A opponents than 5A teams from other regions and even then half of the 5A opponents come from R2. Then in region play, every region has the bottom half that isn't very good so there might be only one or two games on there schedule that provides real insight.

Not criticizing, just saying it's really hard to understand and gauge what they are bringing until we get to the second round of the playoffs where the competition should be fairly level (but not always even then). Will post some stats to demonstrate.
