Western Washington sees storms like this every year; sometimes several in a year. Yet no one from the national press pays any attention. Because the storm is hitting NY does it make it more dangerous than the ones roaring out of the Gulf of Alaska?
Most media outlets are based in NYC, so the "megastorm" gets portrayed as if it's a tragedy waiting to happen. Overreaction is peddled as caution and the mayor of NYC is praised for his grand vision of saving lives.
So what.
Up in the Northwest, residents get their candles, woodstacks and food stores ready and often go outside to watch another typical winter storm. No huge fear mongering by the media; just a precautionary note on the local news reminding residents to watch for flooded rivers and streets or downed trees and power lines. It's no big deal.
I guess it is more lamentable when a storm like that happens to NYC because...well...it's NYC?
