"I agree with your comment, the Utes schedule is light and has scheduled wins on it that serve to undercut the credibility of any possible success this year, please also see BYU's football schedule..."

It's laughable how quickly Utah fans try to change the subject every time Utah basketball is mentioned.

btw, BYU football played #5 Notre Dame, #8 Oregon State, and #21 Boise State this season (25% of their schedule).

How many Top 25 OOC games is Utah scheduled to play in basketball this season? How about Top 100? Top 200?

Salt Lake City, Utah

Sagarin Rankings of OOC opponents

#45 BYU - 106, 140, 11, 39, 69, 197, 323, 74, 33, 143, 274, 70, 8, 338, 116
Average WITH Utah - 129;
Average WITHOUT Utah - 119

#274 Utah - 314, 280, 290, 224, 219, 288, 173, 45, 219, 323
Average WITH BYU - 238
Average WITHOUT BYU - 259

Spin away gonefishn, but the rankings speak for themselves.

Arlington, VA

Average record of BYU's OOC opponents - 17-13; #129 with Utah; #119 w/o Utah
Average record of Utah's OOC opponents - 11-19; #238 with BYU; #259 w/o BYU

BYU RAISES Utah's entire pre-season SOS by 10
Utah LOWERS BYU's entire pre-season SOS by 21

Regardless of how you slice it, that's just plain sad!

Coach K has already addressed this years strength of schedule or lack there of. Nobody at the U is trying to claim the non conference games are strong. They said they tried to put together a favorable schedule to get a young team some confidence so they can hopefully compete at a better level once conference play starts.

The PAC12 is supposed to be much improved this year top to bottom. Getting some wins early will help get a new team some confidence. I'm sure once the team significantly improves, the schedule will as well.

As for this years Utah basketball team, I can't wait to see how they will do with so many new players. They only have 2 returning players from last year so who knows what to expect.

I do find the number of coug fans bagging on Utah's schedule ironic. That is the same thing we have all been saying about your football teams schedule for the last few years. A handful of wins that mean nothing.

"I do find the number of Coug fans bagging on Utah's schedule ironic."

You do, do you?

Apples and oranges comparison QP - Holmoe only scheduled several WAC teams in 2011 and 2012 out of necessity because of the short-term scheduling crunch he faced after BYU's move to Independence, and even then, Holmoe scheduled as many good teams as he could, teams like Texas, Boise State, Notre Dame, TCU and other BCS teams (home and away).

That's very different from what Hill scheduled for the Utes in basketball. With the exception of BYU, an entire OOC schedule of the weakest teams he could find, while running and hiding from Utah State and Weber State.

And, yes, some of your fellow Utah fan were trying to equate Utah's pre-season schedule, with BYU's, which are at complete opposite ends of the SOS spectrum - BYU's ranked 9 on a scale of 10; Utah's ranked 1.

OK BYU fans, we've hashed over how "strong" your OOC schedule is and how "weak" Utah's OOC schedule is...are you ready to talk about conference SOS? How about overall SOS?

My guess is you won't because your conference SOS is something like 300th nationally while Utah's is in the top 20. And your overall SOS (which is the only one anyone cares about) is somewhere around 150 while Utah's is in the top 100.

BYU fans, you make me laugh with your cherry-picking of facts and figures to support your preconceived notions. Bottom line: Utah's overall SOS is better than yours.

Uh....robin. The WCC was the 11th ranked basketball conference last year and the pac12 was the 10th ranked conference.

Please provide us with evidence of your fabrication.

I'm willing to bet that most years the WCC isn't that high, and the PAC-12 isn't that low.

Comparing conference schedules proves ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, since Holmoe and Hill have ABSOLUTELY NO CONTROL over who BYU and Utah play in conference.

Suffice it to say, that Hill, with his pathetically weak OOC scheduling, has GUARANTEED that the Utes will have ABSOLUTELY NO CHANCE of playing in the NCAA tournament this year unless the Utes win the PAC 12 tournament.

Basically, he's written off the season before the Utes have played a single game.

Good luck exciting those fans who have abandoned Runnin' Ute basketball with a slate full of opponents ranked 314 280 290 224 219 288 173 219 323.

WCC placed THREE teams in the NCAA tourny last year (Sagarin/RPI/Tournament Ranking):
#21/24/27 Gonzaga
#37/30/26 St. Mary's
#40/47/48 BYU

The PAC only had TWO NCAA tourny teams:
#32/45/45 California
#72/51/44 Colorado

Unless your record is good enough to get you invited to the NCAA tournament, SOS really doesn't matter now does it?

#294/270 Utah

Bottom line, Hill has scheduled a pre-season of cupcakes that are on the same level as Utah 314 280 290 224 219 288 173 219 323.

I love how utah "fans" are always telling BYU fans to quit living in the past. What matters is RIGHT NOW isn't it? RIGHT NOW the pac12 is not a good conference and utah is an awful basketball team and program. That is how things are RIGHT NOW.

On the otherhand BYU is a perenial NCAA tournament team that has beaten utah 11 of the last 12 times they have played. In the most recent season BYU went to the NCAA tourney and won a 1st round game, utah was something like 6 and 25. The WCC sent 3 teams to the tourney and won some games, the pac12 sent 2 and got bounced immediately.

In otherwords you have nothing.

Funny how most of the words in duckhunter's comment are past tense.

You said, "The WCC sent 3 teams to the tourney and won some games, the pac12 sent 2 and got bounced immediately."

The fact is that the WCC sent 3 teams and won 2 games. The Pac-12 sent 2 and won 1 game ... so no, Colorado did not get bounced immediately.

Also, you mention not living in the past ... the WCC had it's best season ever LAST YEAR. The Pac-10/12 had one if it's worst seasons. If you truly want to live in the present I suggest you start looking at what the two conferences look like TODAY. I've got a sneaking suspicion it'll be you clinging to the past once this season gets under way.

Now this isn't to say BYU won't have a good team. Nor am I saying Utah will be wonderful, they still have a tough road to climb. But the thing you and other people on this thread fail to mention is that BYU has the NEED to schedule a stronger OOC schedule. That much is obvious when you look at Utah's OOC SOS versus their entire SOS rating which jumps BYU's.

btw, BYU football played #5 Notre Dame, #8 Oregon State, and #21 Boise State this season (25% of their schedule).

Lost to them all plus the Utes. Here comes Idaho and NMSU, You all are just a bunch of know-it-alls. I wish I had it all figured out like you gus do.

Gilbert, AZ

It's funny how you chose to ignore San Jose St, but not surprising

Sagarin ranks

#22 BYU
#36 San Jose St
#44 Utah

BYU was within one play of beating Boise State, Notre Dame and Utah, and was within 3 points of Oregon State late in the game.

Utah hasn't been close to winning any of its games against ranked teams, and besides your close win against BYU, you haven't beaten a single D1-A team with a winning record. And, you lost to Utah State, a team BYU beat.

btw, I'd be careful about looking down your nose at Idaho and NMSU. Have you seen the rankings for WSU and Colorado? Don't forget, the Utes lost at home to Colorado last season and struggled to beat WSU in OT.

Once again, BYU will be Utah's signature win of 2012 - welcome back to the 90's.

"once again byu will Utah's signature win of the 2012 season"

Seems like we have signed that paper quite a few times. 8 out of the last 10, 3 in a row ring a bell. I know if you would have played somebody else or if you wouldn't have "given" the Utes so many turnovers you would have won right. LoL!

I guess that would make USU the cougs signature win of the season this year right? Or do you think it will be Idaho?

I love how coug fans view the world through their blue glasses. Last year all we hear is that the y would have beaten the Utes if Riley Nelson would have been playing... it's got to get old coming up with excuses of your team can beat a good team.

Go Utes!
