This whole issue shows how interest in sports has grown way out of proportion in our high schools. We have extra assemblies, differential pay for coaches, modified schedules, expensive sports facilities and equipment, cheer leaders, pep bands, pep clubs, etc., all built around sports competition.

I can't see the interest in sports decreasing. So let's move our athletes into a European-style sports club system so our schools can return more emphasis on academics. Can you imagine this much fuss over the eligibility of a high school debater or math team member?
