To eliminate a problem you must get to the root. Do you really think Romney is going to penalize his base for illegally hiring? If you do, I have some beach front property next to the Great Salt Lake to sell you.

Don't forget sir that the President has exported more illegals than Bush did. It was a point of contention every time the President spoke to an Hispanic group. By the way this is a fact and a specific accomplishment..has Romney told you how he is going to enforce the laws and make it so miserable on the immigrants and their families that they "self deport".

Native and legal U.S. workers suffer along with the undocumented workers from our outdated, under-enforced immigration system. U.S. workers need the jobs and at fair pay. Undocumented workers, many escaping the mass murder and the violence of the drug wars, would not be exploited so easily. The US government could track those who are here easier if undocumented workers could come out of the shadows. Wages likely would go up. A revamped and less complicated immigration progress could do this. Rights of US citizens as well as the basic human rights of the undocumented could be restored.

So why does our legislature and Congress oppose so vehemently all proposals to slap business owners who hire illegals with some heavy-duty fines and penalties?

I think I know the reason.

Could it have something to do with PROFIT?

And could the CONSERVATIVE lawmakers who oppose such penalties, and who demonize those who support such penalties as liberals, really be the root of the problem?

After all, what is REALLY most important? Preserving jobs for American citizens or the bottom line of their corporate and small business contributors?

The root of the problem is poverty and lack of opportunity in their home countries. They certainly don't want to leave their families behind and live with the constant threat of arrest and deportation.
If the US went to walmart to purchase items made in Mexican factories instead of Chinese factories, there wouldn't be nearly as many immigrants here working.

This is my #1 problem with all the talk about illegal immigration.

Hardly anyone is willing to recognize the #1 problem... Businesses who hire illegally.

We could deport all illegals today. But they'd all be back tomorrow because businesses don't want to hire legal immigrants/American workers.

Blah, blah, blah.

We are either honest or we are dishonest. If we wait for the President to act, we prove that we are dishonest. If we excuse ourselves because of the President, we are not only dishonest, but we are disreputable.

Illegal is illegal. It doesn't matter whether we hire them or look the other way when they enter our Country. Either act shows that we are dishonest, just as dishonest as those who enter illegally.

Not only do they take jobs but they lower all wages across the board. Anchor children are the keys to entitlements. They qualify because of the anchor children and the cheap wages. The entitlements are paid by us the tax payer, the hospital bills when they get hurt on the job are paid for the taxpayer. No unemployment tax is paid by the employer, no SSN taxes but if the illegal alien gets an ITN number they get large tax returns without putting anything into the system. Those that hire illegal aliens are cheating the system and are directly responsible for our failure to not be able to afford homes, feed and clothe our children and live the American Dream. Why Utah allows this to happen is beyond comprehension. This has nothing to do with compassion for the Illegal Alien but compassion is the excuse to pocket cash. Its time they are held accountable. Fines and jail time should be administered to those that lie, cheat and destroy the USA for something they can't take with them when they die.

Fleeing a place where you live with the constant threat of death has nothing to do with honesty or dishonesty. Many Mexicans would much rather live with the constant threat of arrest and deportation. If Mexicans were from almost any other country we would allow them to come here as refugees.(approx. 65,000 deaths in drug war). Conservative Romney is for e-verify, a legality check for anyone hired.Pres.Obama's answer was to deport twice as many people as Pres. Bush. Nothing will be effective if we do not secure the border and re-haul the federal immigration system.

Anyone who aids and abets an illegal immigrant is committing a felony against federal laws and statutes. That would include businesses hiring illegals as well as the Department of Homeland Security leaders and employees... who are issuing those 2 year amnesties authorized be Presidential Executive Order. Keep that in mind.

Everytime they try to penalize the people that hire and profit from hiring undocumented workers republicans shoot it down.

They want to go back to what doesn't work and has never worked instead of facing the problem.

Democrats and Republicans have done nothing effective nationally about illegal immigration. Arizona did, om the state level and, apparently, their unemployment rate was concurrently reduced substantially.

Mitt Romney states that he will seek to enforce "e-verify" upon rogue employers (an awful lot of employers seem to be rogues and criminals in that regard). I hope Romney, if elected, will be true to his promise and that, in so doing, he will have the majority support of both houses of Congress. The measure would be very popular with legal residents and citizens, long overdue, and would quickly get the nation back to work.

If not I wish the Utah State government would stop giving Republicans a bad name by failing us in this important matter. I expect there would be little need for paying out so many unemployment checks if they acted decisively, pragmatically and without delay. They need to support the people in general and not illegal employers.

@Gildas:

"Mitt Romney states that he will seek to enforce "e-verify" upon rogue employers..."

E-Verify is worthless. It only effects employers with forty or more employers. This eliminates alotta small businesses... including those who knowingly skirt the law by limiting employees to less than forty. Or, who subcontract workers instead of hiring them.

Take away any group of people, and you do free up their jobs assuming those who are left are willing to fill them, however these people are no longer consumers in our economy either, which means many jobs will disappear if they were to leave.

All in all, getting rid of people doesn't reduce unemployment. It takes business hiring people to do that.

Dear Author and misguided commenters,

A businessman needs someone to work for him and a worker needs work. The businessman freely offers a wage. The worker freely chooses whether to take it or not. This is called TRADE. It is the hallmark of dealing with men in a free, peaceful society. But that is not what you here advocate.

No, you wish for men with guns (the government) to dictate to the businessman whom he will hire (only those who are "legal" and unemployed). You want the government to dictate the terms of their trade (a minimum wage and maximum hours). And you wish to deputize (conscript) the businessman to enforce really bad immigration law.

Of course all of this begins with your desire to violate another hallmark of living free: to live WHERE you want. If someone wasn't born at proper GPS coordinates, you would keep them out!

The government's only proper role in any of this is to ensure no one is forced into labor or forced to accept terms of labor by fraud or violence. And on the border, the government's only proper role is to keep criminals and the diseased out.
