I think a more detailed article would have included that free online courses are allready available from MIT, Stanford and many other sources. coursera.youknowwhat and Khanacademy.uknowwhat is also good. You have to pay to actually get credited courses but if you learn a subject you can always test out of it.

I've taken a lot of online courses, it takes a lot of dicipline so they arn't for everyone but game theory is being used to help keep students motivated. Khan academy uses a point system and awards to keep students feeling like they are accomplishing something.

Don't kids spend hours playing doom and warcraft? Just put mathmatical puzzeles in those and kids will learn them for sure. Or at least make thier math wiz friend very valuable.
