Talk is cheap. OSU was the first team we've played that had a legit
passing attack. USU's was good, but OSU had athletes at WR. I'm glad
they're hungry, but it's garbage to pretend like BYU ever had a legit
secondary. Johnson will improve with time, but everyone else is suspect.
I don't care how hungry they are, the Cougar secondary will leave South
Bend Saturday evening feeling famished after they get shellacked for another
350+ yards for the second game in a row.Final scoreIrish 55BYU
Glad to see our team finally getting upset and determined to change. About time
for some emotion. But I'm confused by Jordan Johnson's comments about
2 and 3 man receiver combinations. I hope they're not only going to shut
down the passing game when one man is running routes. This is the way the game
is played, guys. Be ready...
From number 12 to number 24, with the up and coming games the downward spiral
'wasn't us', 'we made mistakes', really? BYU is still
saying that it is not the opponent but BYU who beats themselves? That might have
made some sense on the close games and admittedly this one was close until the
4th quarter, but give a good teams some credit. I'm sure there is a lot
about football I don't know but it sure looked like BYU's secondary
was slow.We will know better after the Notre Dame game. It is
possible that the defense had an 'off' game but more likely we just
had a good opponent. If we also have an 'off' game against Notre Dame
then I think the defense needs to admit that it is not beating itself. The offense actually looked okay vs. Oregon State, other than the consistent
'mental errors'. Wouldn't it be shocking to go an entire game
without turning the ball over multiple times?
Simple BENCH Jordan Johnson. He is the main reaso nthe Cougars lost on
Saturday. Oh and look back to last years games, #6 was burned time and time
2 words about the secondary: Swiss Cheese.
I totally agree with DC. This is the first game that we really faced any
vertical threat and we got beat badly. I don't expect things to change
anytime soon. This has been the blueprint to beat BYU for years and for some
reason people just don't catch on. Our DB's are slow, play too far off
the ball and bite on routes to try and make the "big play" only to get
burned on a double move. I must say though the biggest problem is
that our D-line gets absolutely no pressure on the QB. Now that the media has
fallen in love with Ziggy he is constantly battling double teams and no one else
provides pressure but Van Noy. You can't realistically expect the DB's
to hold coverage for 8 seconds. Stop the three man rush and bring the heat.
It is readily apparent that Bronco has rules for the rest of the team that he
doesn't have for Riley. I guess things like accountability, assignment
knowledge, and execution are rules Bronco requires for the rest of the team that
he is unwilling to require of Riley. The NCAA isn't the only
institution that has a "Riley Rule".Enter comment
@Parkite1 - the "Main Reason" on Johnson? Think again, R. Nelson was the
main reason near the end of the game - TURN OVER and many time in the past. I
don't think so, Johnson need to settle down. And Johnson, don't talk
about "One of Best in the Nation." Ranking means nothing and just settle
down and do it right and let the media do the talking. Don't
get too emotional when you do lose to ND which won't surprise me this time.
It will be shocking if we win it this Saturday.Have fun at South
Bend with all the history stuff their and Irish fans will welcome you.
KralonHUNTINGTON BEACH, CAIt is never the opponenet that beats
BYU it is always BYU's "lack of execution" or "we beat
ourselves."Pathetic and dilusional.
Several comments by coaches and players said, in effect, OSU didn't do
anything or special. What they did do, however, it what football is all about:
execution. Blocking and tackling; pass and catch.
The difference was two plays, and it happens. Look at the forty niners.
BYU ALWAYS gets burned by good passing teams, half-good passing teams burn BYU
regularly. We don not have speed, we play nobodies...then wonder why a good
team smokes us in the secondary. Our guys play New Mexico State and they think
they are amazing...sheesh. Wake up players. Then, Hoffman gets out
there in the flat, and fails to make even one block to free up another player.
Poor execution, poor coaching, poor talent are killing the BYU program. Esp. at
QB, I guess Riley's dad has something on Bronco...it is the only
explanation. Lark deserves a start. I can't believe how stubborn Bronco
Cougars. Few expect you to win this weekend so you can really make a statement
about yourselves if you can pull this one out. I won't be watching, but
I'll certainly check out the score. I'll watch the replay of the game
if you win. It's just too hard for me to watch my team get embarrassed -
AGAIN. Give it your best!
I'll take Johnson any day over a guy that does not look for the ball but
would rather just run blindly into the receiver. Bills cost BYU that game with a
little help from Bronco by not benching Riley during the Utah game.
To Whoa Nellie - your post is highly ignorant and shows your complete lack of
knowledge about football not to mention your llack of understanding all of the
factors that contributed to a BYU loss against OSU. If you seriously think that
one PI call cost BYU the game there is no helping you. However, regarding your
comment about Bills, the receiver he was covering was Preston Hadley's
missed assignment, or rather, he got burned by the OSU receiver. Bills came
across the field and picked the receiver up. There is no question he should have
looked back however, he was not touching the receiver one tiny bit. In fact, the
receiver was draped over Bills. This was a dubious call that could have gone
either way. Now, let's talk about numerous INTs,, dropped passes, poor D
line play, poor QB protection, no adjustments to speak, etc, etc. Do you think
any of these might have contributed to the loss? Seriously!
Stop with the excuses. BYU is just not that good. They have some great players
and a lot of good players. They lack speed badly. OSU proved they are not that
good. Loosing to Utah proved that they are not that good, Barely beating USU
proves they are not that good. They cannot be great every year. Be happy that
they seem to compete every week. Bashing Riley seems petty, he is the best they
have so they play him.
I probably won't watch the game unless BYU is winning so then you know I
won't watch the game. Here's my prediction Notre Dame 49 BYU 3.
ParkiteJordan Johnson didn't play last year. Do you mean Corby
Eason? He did get burned a lot. He and Preston Hadley were the corners last
year. The secondary didn't play well but the reason it was
noticeable was the talented receivers, the solid offensive line and the solid
backup quarterback of Oregon State. They were by far the best offensive team we
have played so far.
54-10Utah will be pathetic and de-lusional after playing OSU this
You want to win. I mean really be legit? Get rid of Mendenhall
BroncoPlease beg the Big East to take you. We will never be able to get
and keep players that can compete with the big names until you get into a BCS
league. ESPN must be going nuts over their contract so lets stop the bleeding
BYU defense...instead of saying that you lost because you "didn't
execute", why don't you admit that you lost because you faced superior
talent?Oh...and be careful what you wish for. You just may get it
from a bunch of guys in gold helmets that have "National Championship"
on their minds...
stiadotfDo you honestly think OSU has vastly superior talent this
season than the Oregon State team BYU beat in Corvallis last season? Or, the
then 16th-ranked OSU team that BYU stomped in the Las Vegas Bowl in 2009 - you
know, the OSU team with the Rogers brothers?Talent is often
over-rated. It's execution that really matters.
The corners line up 12 yards off the line of scrimmage, start back pedaling at
the snap and still get burned deep. On most pass plays they are in a zone so
they have the benefit of watching the QB instead of the receiver. It's a
much easier defense to defend the pass than man coverage. I would like to
see how they do playing tight man coverage 85% of the season. It would get ugly
OSU getting the Rodgers brothers gone, was a blessing all around.Teams win
when they have lots of talent, with TONS of chemistry. It's pretty
Man I hope the first string QB for Notre Dame has recovered and starts. Because
I know we can't defend a 2nd string QB. He would have a career day just
like every other 2nd string QB BYU faces. ;-)
I have to admit I don't understand how you can be assignment sound all
season and the biggest game of the year you start missing assignments. Either
that's bad coaching in not preparing your kids to play or an excuse. I saw
missed assignments and was shocked by it they were out of position, Utah has
fast receivers too and they weren't out of position there, so I think lack
of prep on this one. Bronco somehow has to calm these guys down for the big
games because they seem to kill themselves with mistakes. I don't know if
they win that game or not but it should have been closer. And also figure out
how to calm down Riley, he makes huge mistakes against good teams and yes
that's because they're better, but he has to know to throw a ball out
of bounds with these better teams, because you can't make those mistakes
with the good teams. Especially in the RED ZONE! The coaching staff needs
training on how to prep mentally for a game, everything else is fine in my
Its clear the BYU haters have not seen Notre Dame play.Notre Dame is
not a very good offensive team. All their games have been very close and
low scoring. The game this weekend will be the same,BYU
WILL have as good a chance as anyone providing they don't have a QB making
mistakes,If Riley Nelson plays he will make mistakes and lose the
game.BYU must change QBs to rectify the season. All the
rest of games are winnable. But it is clear BYU needs significant
coaching changes on the offense and the right QB.Playing hard and
gutsy is not the same as playing smart.
I was very proud of us the first three quarters ot the game vs. #10 Oregon State
which is now #8 after the fourth quarter whipping they gave us. I know that we
were favored to win that game by 5 points and went into the fouth quarter with a
tie score. History shows that we are often a three quarter team and that is
what seperates us from a great four quarter teams.
The truth,Notre Dame beat Miami 40-3.I'd say 40
points will be four times the necessary points to beat byu. Notre
Dame 40byu 9
