Watch out for WX - the 20+ year monkey is off their backs, and you cannot ignore
the momentum factor in sports. WX now plays where they live.
On his biggest off day of the season, he still managed to score. Underestimating
this kids strength, speed, and elusiveness on the gridiron could really kill
anyone in the long run. The poise and cuts that this kid makes are truly
legendary, godlike if you will. He is the best runningback in the state hands
@Sportsfan#1 I think Logan if Im correct was able to stop your STAR
runnin back. If SF does end up playig JD I know you will surprised but the JD
Defense. It doesnt matter how many yards you gain, or passes you catch, if you
cant get in the endzone it wont make a difference, juat ask Grangers STAR running
back..JD will be the hardest team for anyone to beat this year, and if you want
the 3A title it goes through JD..JD FAN TO THE FULLEST..!!
You heard it here first, the 3A state tournament will be completely ran through
by Spanish Fork just because of the STAR running back Braxton Argyle. There is
no one that can compare with his sheer and raw ability on the gridion.
East should be on probation this year and not allowed to participate in the
State Tourney,,The should be the ruling
san juan has had more than one test. the game with Beaver was 6 to 0 at the end
of 3rd quarter. then san juan scored twice in the 4th to get the 20 to 0 win.
san juan is definatley the team to beat in 2A but Manti, millard south summit
and Beaver all have a chance, but would have to play nearly perfect to beat the
Easy fix....Too many teams get into the playoffs....Top three from
each Region should be allowed to fight on. How many 2-8 or 3-7 get to continue
the misery of playing football for another week. Top three teams from each
region finish with a winning record, and can compete with the top region teams.
Why do we continue this madness, too many soft minded people at the UHSAA!Teams from the FBS and NFL work their butt off to have that bye in the
first round. Why not reward the Region Champs with a bye, then play teams that
compete rather than the 40 point blow out wins in the first round of the
ABITOUTSIDE- I do feel Emery has a good team, but have a hard time playing all 4
quarters against the better competition. I agree IF they can play the whole
game against SJ I think they have a chance of winning. It will be interresting
to see how that game goes because it will be SJ's 1st real challenge since
week 1. I give the edge to SJ since they are at home & Emery has shown they
have a big let down in the second half against the better teams. So, it will be
close at half time, but unless Emery changes some things they will again fold in
the second half.
bigbenzo and 2020(Herriman lovers)you seem to really feel that
we all should bow down to the all mightynew Herriman, NO ONE IS
AFFRAID.You say there the #1 ranked offense, yes they have the most
points scored. Here is some stats for your lovely team.Combined record of Region teams, 17-28 not one team besides yours has a
winning record. 5-4 skyline (who won 4 games in its own region, including
against Herriman)5-4 Olympus (who won 4 games in its own region, 1
elseware, You lost to 5A Riverton after talking all year that you should
of won lsat year and will win this year, but again DIDNT.You
complain about the East first game, you cant be serious, did Juan DIEGO get mad
they won region in baseball last year, Snow canyon ranked #1 in 3A has to vacate
region wins, gets the 4th seed, and beats region champ JD(o and JD didnt
have to win a 3 way Coin Flip)You would of played east in semis and
lost,Wait, your time will come, your little league program is THE
BIGGEST in state, youll have your time.
Boys of Fall, your post are usually dead on, however, if Emery decides to play 4
quarters they will be in Cedar, but that is a big it, they are as good as any
team. San Juan I have no idea what they will be like, it will be interesting to
see how these first round match ups play out. I think Millards line is better
than last year, your skill players are the same bunch, but you have a big
ABITOUTSIDE - I don't know about being better than last years team, but
these boys have really pulled together through some adversity at the start of
the season. Good group of kids. Had a pretty good game against a good (but in
my opinion, not as good as last years) Manti team. If they could have limited
their turnovers the 1st half the game might have been a little closer. I think
if they play to their potential they can be competitive with anyone in 2A, but
there are a few really good team out there that could take it. My prediction to
make it to SUU though are Manti/Millard and SJ/S.Summit.Then the ?'s
will be:1) Will Millard finally be able to get then Templar monkey off
their back or will Manti dominate Millard in the playoffs again.2) Will S.
Summit finally be able to get the Bronco monkey off their back or will SJ
continue to bring out the worst in the Wildcats.
JD I hope you are not banking on Millard being down, they are better than last
years team. Millard will win by 30 plus on Friday. SS has been worked all year
against the middle of the pack 2A teams, and against the better teams in the 2A
south they have been beat by 4-5 touchdowns. Millard is really good and will
make it to Cedar.
Yes, yankees 27, you are right these balances occur all the time. Thankfully,
wrestling has done some things to balance the brackets but this isn't
possible per se in team sports as constituted. The other thing I could suggest
that would be easily doable is that the region champs be ranked 1-4. Past that
it is a mess and not needed (to rank all 16 teams). Once the region champs are
ranked use a formula or bracket that would indicate these rankings. Again,
pretty easy and doable and fair.
Bear..You need to look at the facts. SS Rams have beaten No. Sevier and Gunnison
multiple times over the last few years. This is a great senior class and I think
the Millard will be in for a big surprise. As far as hoops goes, SS could
compete favorably in 5A.
@ JD Books,I don't think you could say that Millard is too far
down this year. They lost to South Summit and Manti two the of top four in 2A.
The trophy is still up for grabs but South Sevier will need some really long
arms to reach it. I would not put South Sevier on the level of Manti or South
Summit, they are more on the level of ALA, N. Sevier and Gunnison that Millard
beat by a combined 145-23. After Thursday it will be time for Race and the boys
to defend their championship.
I wouldn't normally comment but I think people need to remember that
Millard is down this year. Sure, the rams have been up and down but these
seniors have a lot of pride and a coach who is used to winning. It's not
hoops yet, the gold trophy is still up for grabs in 2A football!
Beeno...where did I come up with the statement? Read 20/20's comment.I just would want 20/20 coaching my kids at Heriman if all he wanted to
do is dodge teams. You have to go thru East anyway...if it were me I would want
to play them at home instead of at a neutral site. Just thought his tail
between his legs whining about playing East was funny.I would take
the Skyline head coaches approach. We know our fate from the coin flip, now
let's go play. We have to play stiff competition home or on road so bring
it on. That's the attitude to have....
justaroundthecorner- um, read the bracket. How they ended up there is because
there are 2 #1 seeds, winners from region 10 and 11 (JD and Stansbury) and
Hurricane is a #2 from R9. The other side of the bracket will have R9 and R12
#1's DH and Spanish. Overall records count for nothing, it's the
region wins/losses that determine your seed in the playoffs. This is the way
it's done and has been done for quite awhile. Some years it seems unfair to
some, but it is what it is. JD and Hurricane quarterfinals game
would be awesome right?
RE: East and Region 6. I have no idea what will happen in
Tuesday's hearing with East using ineligible players, but if East has to
forfeit four region wins, then Woods Cross is 1st (4-1 with Bountiful but won
the head to head), Bountiful is 2nd (4-1), Highland 3rd (3-2 - that OT loss to
the Braves would cost the Rams top seed - ouch) and Cyprus 4th (2-3). East
would drop to 1-4, tied with Clearfield and out of the playoffs. No
coin flip needed.
@oldtimeftballer - Where are coming up with this??? Who ever said that Herriman
only wanted to go far and feel good about it??? Herriman is out to get that 4A
Championship Ring!!! As it stands now...all roads go through East. Herriman
will play East at home or away...Herriman will play East in the 1st round or the
Championship game!!!Herriman has #1 scoring offense in the state and
the #21 scoring defense in the state. Your comment about a "program that
has never won anything" is ignorant. The school is only in its 3rd year.
Herriman did in its 1st year what no school in Utah 5A history has ever
done...go to the playoffs!!! Last year we won our 1st playoff game and this
year we won our 1st Region Title and earned our 1st #1 seed. Not bad for 3
years!!!I'm not sure what team you represent...but if you have
a team...then use this forum to uplift them and don't worry about
Herriman...they will be fine!!!@footballisgood - that's good
info. I hope East plays....because I think Herriman can compete with them!!!
RE: Coin flips - eagle covered that very well. A few years ago, the coin flip
winner did get third and the other two played off for fourth. But that changed
for the reasons eagle cited. It's an automatic berth, but a lower seed,
without no region playoff game vs. a higher seed, but an extra game.RE: Region 8 #5 vs 6 #4 play-in game. Bulldog72 covered that. According to
the 2013 realignment guidelines, each region within a classification shall
qualify the same number of teams or individuals for post season, regardless of
region size. So that would get rid of that silly play-in game. Let's hope
the UHSAA sticks to that. One goal of the two-year realignment
process is to make every region within a classification the same size and have
the same number of teams qualify. Originally, 4A regions were the same size,
but the Utah County schools wanted to stay together and not have to travel to
Salt Lake. So Region 8 grew to eight schools. There was discussion that only
four teams should qualify, but the Executive Committee which oversees the
bracketing process decided to allow a fifth team.
@oldtimeftballer: It's common sense to want to play what may well be the
best team in the state as deep in the playoffs as possible. I don't want
East out, I just want them where they belong, in 1st place. That whole region
is excellent and there are no guarantees that Herriman gets out of the 1st round
against Bountiful, Woods Cross or Highland. Our program is only in its 3rd
year, so ya, we haven't won anything. We were the 1st 5A team to make the
playoffs in their 1st year. You would have to know something about Herriman
before you could forget something about Herriman. It seems you're either
just trying to pick a fight, or ignorant.@footballisgood: Thanks for
pointing that out. Its a relief. But I would feel bad for those kids if that
happened to East.
Re:20/20Haha. I forgot Herriman just wants to go far and feel good
about it.What does it matter if you play East first, second or
Championship? You still have to play and beat them. Big Deal.
Unless you want some sort of moral victory which sounds like it comes from a fan
of a program that has never won anything.....
@ BearYou must never have seen Richfield play, they are probably the
most penalized team in the state, even at home. Also most the refs from the
central area are from Salina and have a strong bias against Richfield. I guess
at least it was not a whine they will win because they are bigger.
Beaver/Gunnison - I agree with Boys of Fall, Beaver has progressed beyond
Gunnison. Beaver 34 Gunnison 6Millard/S. Sevier - Sorry JD Books but the
Rams will not be hoisting any gold trophies for football, but there is always
basketball. Millard 42 S. Sevier 13Emery/Kanab - Coach Jones will get a
home coming game at San Juan. Emery 31 Kanab 19Richfield/N.Summit - I
will have to give Richfield the home field (ref) advantage on this one.
Richfield 27 N. Summit 20Best of luck to all the teams and leave it all on
the field. No regrets!
2020, you are wrong, because if East vacates all but Highland, that means that
Cyprus would gain another region win, and that would then give them two region
wins as opposed to East's one, which would put Cyprus in free and clear
I've heard that East my have to forfeit all of their games, except the last
one because of the eligibility issues. I'm in Herriman, and if that
happens, it's a bunch of garbage. East would play Cyprus in a play-in
game, win, win the play-in game with Region VIII, and Herriman would play them
in the first round. Winning a region championship (and a fortunate flip of the
coin in this case) is supposed to "reward" you by playing the lowest
seed to make the playoffs from the region that you crossover with.I
hope region VI and the UHSAA doesn't punish Herriman, by punishing East in
that regard. Especially because it doesn't seem as if East was cheating to
get a competetive advantage. Look at Juan Diego and Snow Canyon in baseball
last year. That is exactly what happened to them. Juan Diego got stuck playing
Snow Canyon in the first round because of this very scenario. Snow Canyon won
and JD had to go through the losers bracket to get another shot at them in the
state finals. It may have ended differently if JD hadn't gotten the shaft.
Where is Juab? Good thing you have Carbon, you should be able to run the score
up and prove your dominance once again.
How does Stansbury (Undefeated), Juan Diego (Undefeated), and Hurricane with one
loss all end up in the same lower bracket?
@UtahBruin - Herriman is #1 seed, Olympus is #2 seed, Skyline is #3 seed and
Westlake is #4 seed.
Mammoth- that "imbalance" happens all the time in playoffs. It seems
every year there is a tougher region and it usually changes every few years.
Football, basketball, baseball, they all have tougher regions in cycles. It does
kind of suck when the top or bottom half are loaded or unbalanced, but it's
what the system is and has been. I remember a few years back in 3A basketball,
Wasatch and Morgan were both having amazing seasons with like 1 loss between
them, they met in the Semis, although it was clearly the championship game.
However, Wasatch won, then lost the next day to a spunky Tooele team. I think
the day before had drained the wasps emotionally, but that's how it happens
sometimes. Oh, and don't count out the Wasps, I think they match up way
better against DH than most would think. It will be close, but Wasatch will win
The play in game is a result of the UHSAA giving in to Springville after they
said that 3A/4A was set, which then gave Region 8 and extra team. Part of the
reason for having the regions as they were was to eliminate these types of
games. Then, Region 8 whined that since they had more teams, they should get
another one in to the playoffs. So now, the 4A regions (Region 7 had its turn
last year) have to take turns every year accommodating Region 8 in a play-in and
then turn around and have to play a #1 seed on a short week. That about
About the weird differences between rankings and seeds...that's just how it
is. Since rankings are often simply a best guess, and arguments can be mode for
and against all sorts of ideas (think BCS) Utah uses region places to seed the
championships. Since ties are possible, and teh breaking of those ties is
pretty simplistic, it does make the first round or two a bit strange, and
sometimes bigger games are played in the semis than in the finals, but in the
end, you gotta win 'em all to be the champions.I grew up in
Oregon...my senior year my team lost only two games in a 10 team region, went
9-3 overall, and still didn't go to state, as only the top two in region
went. Utah obviously has a very different system, when 2/3rds of the teams (or
more) can qualify for state.
Sorry, I miss read the pairing the way it was typed. Herriman or the Region 7
#1 does not have a play in game. But in any case, why is a legit #4 seed out of
Region 6 have to play a crappy Salem Hills or Springville team to get into t he
playoffs. Seed the teams and get on with it already. Thanks
BigBenzo88 - Do you know who got the two and three seeds between Skyline and
White Knight Dixie lost to SC which DHills destroyed. Your theory is completely
confusing! Head to head should always take care of equal records. Hurricane and
Desert Hills both are 4-1 if they should end up 5-1 then the head to head should
take care of the tie. I know Dixie beat DH but now that Dixie has lost its
second game their record will stand at 4-2 because of their bye this week. If
Snow Canyon beats PV then SC and Dixie will be tied at 4-2 then SC would be 3rd
seed and Dixie would be 4th seed because of the head to head record. If PV beats
SC then PV is 4 and Dixie would be 3rd.
@UtahBruin - Herriman just won the coin toss and has the #1 seed for Region 7.
We don't have a play-in game....we will play the winner of the play-in game
of Region 6 #4 and Region 8 #5. Westlake finished as the #4 seed in Region 7
and will play the #1 seed in Region 6.
The brackets this year in 3a seem to be a little imbalanced as far as tougher
competition. Really its just chance I guess. Based on the bracket the UHSAA
had posted last week, in the upper bracket you've got Spanish Fork, Desert
Hills and lower bracket Juan Diego, Hurricane, Stansbury and Dixie. I would say
Spanish and Desert Hills has an easier road to the Championship game. I
predict, PV will win this Wednesday, and PV will give Spanish Fork a good game,
but will lose to SF in the first round. I predict Desert Hills will beat North
Sanpete in Round 1, Wasatch in Round 2, and play SF in Semis. I think SF is the
more balanced team this year. In the other bracket, its too bad we'll see
JD and Hurricane in the 2nd round, but Juan Diego will win and play Dixie in the
Semis, but they will win, and play SF for the state championship, and I predict
Juan Diego to win it all.
Will someone please explain to me how the Region 7 #1 has to have a play in
game? Are you kidding me. I am a Westlake parent and support the Thunder (God
help us at East in the first round) But why is the #1 having a play in game
with a #5 finisher. Why not make the #5 and Westlake have the play in game.
This is a huge problem with the UHSAA playoff system, you only have 16 teams,
rank them for crying out loud so that we don't have the championship game
in the Quarters and Semis anymore. I am sorry, but Westlake finished 3 and 6,
they should not be in the playoffs.
sjhsports from what it looks like, it appears you are right. I was hoping
Beaver would win the flip because I'd much rather drive to Beaver than
Moab. Here's how I see this week going in 2A:Beaver/Gunnison-
Rematch of week 2 that saw the Beavers winning in OT. This game won't be
that close. Since then it appears the Beavers have got better & the Bulldogs
haven't improved much during the year. Beaver 35 Gunnison 14Millard/S. Sevier- Hate to dissappoint JD Books but this game isn't going
to be close & the Rams can start concentrating on basketball. Millard 42 S.
Sevier 7Emery/Kanab- Emery seems to play good football, but only the 1st
half. Against the top 3 teams in the North Emery was either tied or winning at
halftime. But, were then outscored a combined 77-21 in all 3 losses. Emery 35
Kanab 21Richfield/N.Summit- Should be the closest game with neither team
really dominating any of their games. Richfield 28 N. Summit 21Good
luck to all the teams. Have fun!!! It's almost over so enjoy the time you
have to play.
Yankee. I know that is how it will come out. But, I still think that with
d-hills losing to dixie, that loss should put them in a tie with hurricane. So
with both losing once, they should do a coin flip.
Juan, but DH beat Hurricane, and that works as the tie breaker. No coin flip
Region 9 in 3a needs to have a coin flip. Both d-hills and hurricane have the
same region record.
South coin flip. Beaver is by far is the second best team in the 2A south
region. To bad it came down to the flip.
I'm guessing the 5A bracket will look like this.Riverton @ AltaViewmont @ SyracuseFremont @ HunterBrighton @ BinghamDavis @
KearnsCwood @ LPPG @ JordanGranger @ Northridge
If the three teams have no other criteria to separate them like head to head
wins it is pretty typical in a three-way tie for two playoff berths that the
"winner" of the coin toss gets the fourth seed. The advantage of this
is your automatically in the playoffs while the winner of the play-in game gets
the third seed. However, the loser is out altogether. If there was a tie for
fourth place between three teams for one berth, what would happen is the winner
of the coin toss would get a bye. The losers would play a half of football. The
winner would advance to play the winner of the coin toss and they would then
play a half with the winner moving on to the playoffs. If there is a three-way
tie for second place with three berths, if it is a situation where they all beat
each other than they would flip coins. If there is a situation where the tie
can be broken with head-to-head criteria then that would be used.
I can only speculate that it's because with the coin toss they are free and
clear with a playoff spot, whereas the other two teams have to play to decide
theirs, so they give one of them the #3 spot. But honestly, I don't know.
Maybe George Felt can enlighten us, if he's reading this?
@proudbigbrotherNot really a big fan of fremont just curious of why they
gotn a 4 seed instead of the 3 for the coin toss
Are you really complaining about Fremont drawing Hunter or Granger? I mean, if
Fremont can't handle either of them in the first round then their chances
in the post season aren't looking good anyway.
I know, right? Doesn't make sense to me either footballfan8. They should
go in as 3rd and the others should have a play-in for fourth.
Wait so fremont wins the toss and gets the 4th seed while layton and davis fight
for the 3rd seed?
