One thing is clear -- he would be much, much better than the one we have now. I thin it's time to give Cooke a chance.

If he increases funding for education, who is going to pay the bill? Utah has large families who are already cash strapped. Is he going to raise their taxes? Are they supposed to eat bread and water?

Is he going to increase the taxes on those who have no children or whose children are no longer in school?

Utah requires a balanced budget, so who is going to pay that $2,200,000,000 that he wants? That comes to over $700 a year for every man, for every woman and for every child in Utah. Can a family with four kids afford to pay another $4,200 per year in taxes?

He said that we need jobs, but that he won't give tax breaks to lure businesses to move to Utah. What he is really saying is that NO business would move to Utah if that business received a substantial financial advantage from another State. All the jobs that that business would create will be lost to Utahns. All the income tax from those jobs will be lost to the State of Utah.

It doesn't seem to me that he has thought things through.

“In the first 120 days of my administration, I will present a plan to the people of Utah that moves us from 50th to 30th in per pupil funding over the next four years.”

What’s the plan, Peter? Why wait until you are in office if it’s a good idea.

“In the past three years, there has been a net increase of just 3,153 jobs in our state”

But our unemployment rate is lower than the rest of the nation and BO has been president. Our local leadership has allowed us to outperform the rest of the nation, but we still exist in a national and global economy. Without BO, I’m sure our job growth would have been better.

The rest of your comments on jobs should just urge us all the more to replace the president.

Health care - nothing is free, expanded medicare will end up being something we cannot afford even if BO claims to cover it initially.

Then there is your party affiliation, wich leads me to believe you are more likely to back gay marriage and abortion on demand funded by the taxpayer.

if we invest 250 million and only get a return of 3.6 million back. That is horrible Cooke. Really horrible. that is only 1.4%. From what I understand that is over ten years so that is .14% back.

That is not a good investment.

Mr. Cooke says "In the past three years, there has been a net increase of just 3,153 jobs in our state." If true we should be thankful. In many states the employment rate now is higher than when Obama took office. The Obama Administration can continue to buy jobs for only so long as we slip closer to bankruptcy. Soon or later somebody is going to have to pay for the spending binge we are currently on.

Probably why Gov. Herbert is going to be re-elected.

"Medicaid expansion, a policy that, for a 10-year investment of $250 million, will return $3.6 million to Utah."

Should "$3.6 million" have read $3.6 BILLION??

Did Mr. Cooke or Deseret News make a major error here?

A billion is 1000 times greater than a million.

If the statement stands as correct, then a $3.6 million return on $250 million is a very bad return on investment.

I'm not a sheeple.

Anyone without the letter (R) can count on my vote....

I'm not a sheeple either, but anyone not a Demy can count on my vote. We can't afford the crazy spending and taxation proposed by Dems. Thank goodness I can think for myself and vote accordingly, unlike the Dems looking for a so-called "free" handout from the government (aka, living off your working neighbor).

Politics might be better without either Democrat or Republican candidates.

That would give us more choice but would it give us all more sense?

Yes, there are a lot of people who vote based on letters of the alphabet instead of on the candidate's qualifications. Nothing new there.

Agreed. A lot of them would never vote for a "D". A lot of them would never vote for an "R". Both positions are not appropriate -- that is why I have never voted a straight party ticket in my 43 years of voting. Vote for the person, not for the party.

Where in the Republicans record is there any spending/deficit reduction? All this nonsense about the Democrats spending us into oblivion is nonsense. The republicans have equal if not worse record on deficit reduction. George W Bush administration is great example.

Just because everybody else jumps off a bridge doesn't mean it's smart. You can't justify giving more booze to an alcoholic just because he expects it.

The people have the power to throttle back federal spending. They just don't want to.

LDS LIb,
thanks again for proving the intolerance of the left. Those who do not agree with you are sheep. Typical leftist comment.

republicanthinkstraight.
still blaming bush? How original
let's look at the recod, shall we?

bush's accumulated debt in 8 years - $4 trillion

BO's accumulated debt in 4 years -$6 trillion

What tortured logic are you trying to invoke saying $4 trillion in 8 years is worse than $6 trillion in 4 years? Oh, I know, DEM logic

Notice that Cooke didn't mention a word about the Top of the Ticket, his Party's Banner Carrier, Barack Hussein Obama, whose disastrous economic policies eclipses those of even the most inept Jimmy Carter. So why is Cooke part of that team? Explain that one to Utahns.
