@ Rock "Take away the 31-yard completion from Travis Wilson to Dres Anderson and it was a third sub-300-yard game."

Rock, I guess it's all in how you want to spin it. Had the 47 yard TD play stood the Utes would have had over 350 yards in total offense against a good USC team. Utah still would have lost the game but I don't think things are quite as bad as you spin it... Utah hung in there

If you watch the replay our o-lineman was only 3.5 yards in front of the line of scrimmage when Hays released the ball. Anyone know how the ineligible receiver down field rule works? I thought the o-line could go up to 5 yards down field. If that's the case then the play was legal and it was a TD.

Yes Utah showed heart. they were outmatched as most teams in the country are against USC. But Utah had their chances. Things went Utah's way against BYU but not USU and and USC.

With these tough losses, Utah has to rebound or risk a bowl eligibility scare.

The offensive line was much better tonight, and White IV looked like he is finally getting healthy. He was the man last year. This year Utah's offense needs him.

I also think Brian Johnson needs to put more on Hays plate. He is ready to do more. It's worth the risk because PAC 12 games will be high scoring and Utah will have to score to win.

If White IV was fresh and Utah's line had gelled earlier, Utah would have beat USU. The Trojans got one sack tonight on Utah's line and Hays had time to throw (wasn't hurried much). At USU, Wynn and Hays had Aggies in their face on every drop back a few weeks back.

Time to move on and show the heart Utah showed last year bouncing back from tough losses.

Real puff piece here. Nowhere is it mentioned that the Utes had only 2 first downs in the second half before the final drive when the game was still on the line. Also, he didn't mention that USC missed two makeable field goals. He also didn't talk about Whit losing his head in complaining about the reffs.

Utah was quite lucky to keep the game relatively close in a game where USC was playing quite sloppy.

USC is an elite team all around. This game shows just how far Utah is in playing the big boy of the conference. They gave TDs away and still got annihilated at home. There are no UNLVs in the conference this year. Utah will have to compete. With the worst offense in the conference, and one of the worst in the nation, that task will be tough. Getting 4 wins will be a huge challenge. Clearly, Johnson has no clue what he is doing. The only reason Utah has beaten a D1 school is because BYU gave the game away with the turnovers.

"Give the Utes some credit. It wasn't a blowout until then end, which is a lot like sticking to a diet … until shortly after lunch."

It only wasn't a blowout because USC gave away the ball in their own red zone twice for 2 TDs.

Without the spin, USC dominated Utah, and without those turnovers it would have been a blowout. USC is beatable. Utah made a million mistakes. This is to be expected of a team that is out of it's league in it's league.....

Although I really hate the UTES!!!!!! They did play much better this game, Caveman you say Johnson does not know what he is doing I disagree I saw them open the play book up and do some great plays. Face it Barkley is good he is a fantastic QB as he is as billed, probably one of the best in the nation. Both the Y and the U will struggle to win games in Oct. Go Cougars beat USU.

I agree that Utah played a better game than they have previously as well as Brian Johnson did a much better job calling plays. The Utes continue to kill themselves with stupid penalties and ruined many of the good results from the plays called. Caveman, how do you give the game away with turnovers. Either you win or lose. 80% of games are won and loss based upon turnovers. That is what happens in every game. Utah was better than BYU the past two years regardless of how you spin it. But I'm starting to hear Utah fans sound like BYU fans stating that turnovers and referees are to blame. That is what is meant when they say, "that is why you play the game". Utah played better, but were lucky to stay in the game. USC is a better team and showed it after going down 14-0.

"During a break, the U. ski team was honored for finishing second nationally."

LOL, typical of the Utes, celebrating finishing 2nd.

As expected, the Utes have dropped from division contender to getting back slaps for "giving it the old college try".

I agree with the problem of their heads. However, they have heart AND power to play in the PAC.

Mr. Caveman, glad to see Y fan delusion alive and well. Your team was losing 24 to 7 against Utah and never led in the game before a lucky come back that still wasn't enough. USC would beat BYU handily but since you guys play in the WAC you'll never know. USC is the real deal with one of the best QBs in the country and the best receivers. Utah had a chance but the anemic offense again doomed them. Time to begin the Travis Wilson era as Utah has good receivers, they just get the ball enough.

Utah is like those Arizona schools for a long time. Might as well get dozen of black roses near you.

Brad, you were correct in your previous article. Your Utes did, indeed, play ugly. I believe the 112 ranking in offense is spot on. You Utes are in for a VERY long season unless your can shore up your signal-calling position.

Isn't Utah 0-1 in the WAC?

At 4-7 in the PAC, 0-2 this season, it's funny how the more things change, the more they remain the same for the Utes. The perennial WAC also ran has now become the perennial PAC also ran.

Here is a bit of an odd observation from someone who grew up and went to school in Utah, but hasn't lived there in many years. I think rivalry games are a fantastic part of any sport and the emotion they generate is a great thing especially in college football. I think during the rivalry week the fan bases should completely talk smack to each other. It is just plain fun! However, the rest of the year, especially in a relatively small place like Utah (at least in a sports context) shouldn't all Utahans want the three major universities to do well? At their core, BYU, UTAH, and USU are made up of young men who come from our community. I mean I love the fact that I get to hate BYU one week a year as a University of Utah alumnus, but the rest of the time I want to see Utah-based teams (Utah, USU, and BYU) do well against any other team. Let's face it, Utah as a state doesn't get much respect nationally in any sport. We should probably stick together.

@ view from afar,

I agree with you 100%. I'm a huge Cougar fan but I was sick last night when the Utes faltered after a fantastic start. I only root against Utah and Utah State when they play BYU, other than that, I want all 3 three schools to play lights out against the rest of their competition. Looking forward to the Aggies and Cougars tomorrow night.

Go Cougars!

To view;

I would probablly like you, since Cornell is in the family blood and we lived there for 8 years; But, as a long time socal resident and 'newer' Utah resident and with BYU blood running very blue, I can't agree with you.

It is always a great day when Utah loses...at any sport. The only thing better than Utah losing is BYU winning. for me, Max said it correct.

Sorry.

Since you live in beautiful Ithaca, you may not be aware of the last two decades of Ute fans becoming the worst in the Country....UCLA/USC for my 30 years there doesn't have a speck of the rancor that the Utes have towards the Cougars. So, no. We can't cheer for Utes. Ever. Even if we wanted to cheer them on, (I don't) the ute fan base wouldn't allow it.

OK, I lied. I did cheer once for the Utes, against Alabama. I repented and have never done it again.

Nice win Trojans! Too bad you gave up the late cheap touchdown!

I thought the Utes showed some good improvement than what I have seen the past few weeks. The defense came back with a strong showing after laying an egg at ASU. I was also very impressed with our offensive line play - they didn't give up a sack until the end of the game and they also managed to open up some holes for John White to run through.

All that being said, USC is a very good football team. Their two receivers Woods and Lee play the game at a completely different level and Barkley is a great QB that can get them the ball.

I have to agree with what coach Whit said in his interview after the game - that it is time to get Travis Wilson more involved in the offense. Hays has been a serviceable back up but in the 12 games that he has now started for the Utes, he has yet to throw over 200 yards and that is not going to get it done against good teams no matter what conference they are in.

Go Utes! and Go Aggies!!
