Finally! This is a discussion that needs to take place. There are too many people that now see the FedGov as nothing but a Sugar Daddy, a free ride with no work involved, cradle to grave support. That is not the way it should be. And until someone is willing to broach the subject it cannot be addressed.
I was born in a house with no electricity and no indoor plumbing. There was no insulation in the walls and only one wood burning stove for heat, along with another wood burning stove for cooking. No color TV. My family didn't even have a phone until I was 20 years old.
Do I have any regrets for such a hard start in life? Absolutely not. I worked my rear end off and never allowed myself to be a victim. I took every opportunity to do something with my life and refused to stop trying. Little by little, I made a life that today is very comfortable. I have never been on government welfare and despise those who get on it long term. That is not the path to happiness.
Do not become a slave to the FedGov!
Since when is telling the truth a controversy?
We have a nation of beggars and Obama is leading the way.
He blatently said his job isn't going to be to worry about anyone that doesn't vote for him.
He won't show anyone that he pays federal income taxes. He won't even show his taxes to a republican and have them vouge for him. That would at least be something.
So many republicans and democrats have expressed that they just don't BELIVE Mitt about what he says it's amazing that he's the republican candidate. Are republicans trying to hire the best liar?
The problem is that a lot of the 47% are seniors, young families with children (child and other tax credits get their bill down to 0), young people who are just getting their first job or are in college and don't make much, and the unemployed who are having trouble getting jobs. Suggesting that the 47% don't want to take personal responsibility is insulting. Plus the top 10 states for highest percentage of people not paying income taxes... only Florida voted for Obama, the other 9 were all for McCain and will vote for Romney (Idaho Texas Louisiana Tennessee Arkansas Georgia Alabama Mississippi and South Carolina). If the 47% were all Obama supporters or mostly Obama supporters while the 53% were mostly Romney supporters... Romney would be winning the northern states and Obama the southern states but that's not the case so it seems to me that at a minimum the 47% is split between the two parties, and since seniors are reliably conservative... the 47% might actually lean a bit conservative.
Red states are more likely to be takers. Blue states are more likely to be contributors. The 1% are the most likely to feel entitled.
What controversy? You mean the controversy that the main stream media manufactures from any Romney comment while looking the other way on the very real and scary Obama comments, or the controversy that the media is not doing its job?
Give him the mike...Give him the mike!
Put him front of the cameras and give him the mike!
Romney can't speak publically unless it's scripted and run past 7 layers of PR handlers.
and this is why...
One wonders if mit is part of the 47% who pay no income taxes?
A recent IRS report showed that 20,752 households that reported earning more than $200,000 in 2009 paid no federal income taxes. About 1,500 of those tax-free Americans were millionaires.
A lot of people who pay no income taxes are using the loopholes and deductions designed for them, as low income, hard working families. The same deductions which mit used to pay less (percentage wise) on his taxes (that he has released) than most average Americans, as constantly defended by the far right as "legal." So why is it, that when poor, working or retired people use the legal means to reduce their tax burden, they are freeloaders?
less then 9% of the population receive partial assistance from the government and less then 4% rely on it as their sole source of income. 91% of Americans rely solely on their own income and those that make to little are allowed to not pay personal income taxes but must pay all other taxes.
Mitt the mocker strikes again.
Mitt needs to become a better and more diplomatic campaigner. It's hard to tell the unvarnished truth these days and still expect to win elections. This election really will be the parasites and predators vs. the producers and providers, the takers vs. the makers, and the shirkers vs. the workers. It will tell us a lot about the chances of survival for this nation. Obama has used trillions of our (and our grandkids') dollars (which we don't have) to buy special interest votes--and he's bought a whole lot of them. It's a very scary proposition for those of us who hope to see a bright future.
worf:
My dad is 77 yrs old. Worked and paid federal income taxes for 50 yrs before he retired. Now he collects SS and pays no FIT. Are you calling my dad a beggar?
My son is 21 yrs old. He works 2 part time jobs while going to college full time. He doesn't make enough money yet to pay any federal income taxes. Are you calling my son a beggar?
FINALLY....Gallup says Obama has 47%. so Romney was right! Too bad for Obama the food stamp president that Gallup hasn't ever been right? But Rasmussen always is and Rasmussen has Romney up by two over Obama! Good Bye food stamp party!
I've always been a little concerned about Romney, because he is wishy washy enough to back down in situations like this. I'm proud of him for holding tight and continuing to support what he said. If he had backed down, that would have been the only disappointing issue in this story. He was absolutely 100% right on in his "secretly recorded" statement. And the ridicules thing is that the Obama press is trying to make a big deal out of it. Romney was actually being conservative. He wasn't being hateful or vindictive, or arrogant, like a certain other candidate we know. He was being honest and accurate! The lovers of big government, dependency and cradle to grave socialism, are the same crowd that hate American traditionalism and success and fortune. They are never going to vote for Romney!
-- "When you're president of the United States, you are president of all the people, not just the people who voted for you," said press secretary. --
How true this is. Both candidates and their running mates would do well to remember it.
No candidate can scorn nearly half the American people as freeloading deadweight that expects the government to feed them, or seriously suggest that a $250,000 income makes you "middle class."
No candidate can trash traditional values or dismiss the countless millions of Americans who oppose same-sex "marriage," on-demand killing of human fetuses, or rewarding people who break immigration laws.
Who remembers when we last had such roadblocking, polarization, and outright hostility among POTUS candidates and the parties in Congress, all of whom seem intent on set on pursuing their own agendas at the cost of what is best for America? During the Reagan, Clinton, and two Bush administrations, POTUS and Congress mainly worked together and worked out their differences when necessary for the best interests of the American people.
Obama and Romney make me nostalgic for Clinton and Bush.
This election season, my prayer is not "God bless America," but "God save America."
Of course Romney would never say that out in the open. It is good it came out. And why now - probably a gift to Obama from the press to deflect from Libya's president's announcement that the White House explanation of why the attack was fallacious. Now Romney is forced to stand up like a man instead of tailoring every word to the ballot box.
you all ned to read and reread the article posted right above this one titled "half avoid taxes......." until you understand why your empty rhetoric is not holding any water outside the extreme right of your party.
This poor man. He really should stick to his script. What bothers me most is that there are so many that believe this nonsense about the 47%.
Please explain to this candidate that this is called Federalism. It was a battle fought as the country was established. This concept of "all in it together" is what makes us different than any other nation. The concept of helping mankind is probably closer to the way some of you feel religiously than this strange new wave of conservatism that has become so popular in this state.
Social Security, for example, was not an elective. It was/is the law of the land. I paid into it. I have an expectation of a return. It is not an entitlement. I invested totally and supported it.
We do this in this country. We help.
I feel badly for y'all that feel like you got yours by yourself. You didn't.
merich39,
Did I say all people are beggars? No! Use some common sense.
@worf
"We have a nation of beggars and Obama is leading the way"
"a nation of beggars" not with some beggars or that has some beggars, but "a nation of beggars."
I think you show the same lack of "common sense" Romney shows every-time he allows his mouth to run out ahead of him.
I agree with I Choose Freedom, that to many people see the Fed Government as a sugar daddy. People like big oil companies, Big Banks, General Electric (remember corporations are people to). We have to get these people off of the government dole. I am tired of these government free loaders!
Oh were those not the people that Mitt was talking about?
Tolstoy,
Sorry you don't see it.
We have a great and free country. Except for some handicap people, we all have opportunity to succeed. It is unfortunate to see so many people on government assistance. Yes, some are in need, but the majority can care for themselves. It starts with wise voting, and being responsible. Government should not be our parents, but we keep acting as if they are.
Government brought us inflation, leading to so many people being. And our people voted these politicians in. Many don't see through the deceitful speeches, and we may continue in the same path.
