A few years ago, I remember reading that the U.S. government was going to sell off its strategic supply of helium as a cost saving move. It cost money to maintain it.
That's what the article said, they started selling off the reserve to pay off the debt of storing it.
The rest of the world is modernizing so thier high tech applications are gobbling up helium. Case closed. The helium is being sold on the world market so american citizens will have less of it forever.
We'll find something else to decorate partys with and business will eventually see the need to recycle thier helium instead of releasing it. No big deal.
