Stevens snuck into Benghazi on a cargo ship during the uprising, he stuck it out with the rebels even when it looked like Qaddahfi's troops were going to retake Benghazi. There are probably a number of former rebel commanders (now local militia commanders) saying, "This guy helped us, he was my friend, he was under our protection and he got killed. Now let's go find the people who did this."
